Lautenberg wins; Democrats add one N.J. House seat
Found: 4 Weeks 1 Day 16 Hours 57 Minutes ago
Asbury Park Press - Democrats Barack Obama and Frank Lautenberg cruised to victory in New Jersey Tuesday, while Democrats expanded their edge in the House of Representatives by one seat.Obama, who was declared winner of the national election at 11 p.m., won New Jersey along with Lautenberg minutes after polls closed with few ballots even counted.Lautenberg, a Democrat from Cliffside Park, won a record fifth term representing New Jersey in the U.S. Senate over Republican Dick Zimmer, a former congressman. In New Jersey, Obama led McCain 56 percent to 43 percent and Lautenberg led Zimmer 55 percent to 43 percent with 82 percent of the votes counted.""Tonight is not just simply a victory for me, it's a victory for America and a victory for the people of New Jersey,''Lautenberg said. ""This country is demanding a drastic change from the policies of the last eight years and working with President Barack Obama, we'll deliver for our country.''Lautenberg said Americans sent a message to President Bush: ""Your lease on the White House is over.''Zimmer conceded at 9:15 p.m., sounding both conciliatory and bitter.""At this critical moment, the nation needs to unite as one,''Zimmer said. He later added, ""I love this state, but I remain dismayed that New Jersey faces an epic affordability crisis.''Republicans were more reflective in McCain's New Jersey campaign gathering in Hamilton Township, Mercer County.""No matter who wins tonight, we need to end what's going down in Washington and stop the bitter partisan divide this country is in,''state Sen. Bill Baroni Jr., R-Mercer, McCain's state chairman said. ""Our problems are too big.''The biggest intrigue in the state was the two highly contested congressional seats where Republican incumbents are retiring.Republican Medford Mayor Chris Myers conceded his race in the 3rd District against state Sen. John Adler, a Cherry Hill Democrat, before 10:30 p.m. In the 7th District, state Sen. Leonard Lance, R-Hunterdon, appeared on track to defeat Assemblywoman Linda Stender.""Sure it's a cloud on the night, but winning a congressional race with John Adler and winning the Burlington County freeholder race makes it an overwhelming night for us,''Democratic Party state chairman Joseph Cryan said. With high turnout fueled by the presidential election, poll workers in New Jersey were constantly busy but reported only sporadic problems.New Jersey voters focused on the top of the ballot.""The last eight years have been horrible. The next four years will at least be not as bad, and with McCain they would certainly be worse,''said unemployed Michael Cerminara, 26, of Moorestown, who voted the Democratic ticket. Many voters either skipped the U.S. Senate election or voted strictly on party lines. With more than 80 percent of votes counted, there were 371,000 more votes cast in the presidential race than in the Senate contest. Even Democratic supporters seemed blase about 84-year-old Lautenberg, who dominated the race.""Although I'm a Democrat, I believe Lautenberg has been in there for too long,''said graduate student Zina Rodriguez, 37, of Freehold, who had concerns about his age. ""But I still voted for him, I voted the party line.''The state's other 11 representatives -- including Rob Andrews, D-Haddon Heights, who said he wouldn't run if he lost his primary challenge to Lautenberg -- were expected to be reelected.Garden State voters split two ballot questions to change the state's constitution with 76 percent of the votes cast. One seeking to clarify rules for when voters must approve state debt was approved by a 57 percent to 43 percent vote; the other that would allow judges in towns that share courts to be appointed by municipal officials instead of the governor was defeated 45 percent to 55 percent....
