At 92, Edna is staying put
Found: 2 Days 9 Hours 20 Minutes ago
Times-Union - Albany crossing guard was worried she'd have to leave nearby apartment ALBANY ? At the age of 92, crossing guard Edna Rinaldi, will remain on duty at her longtime post at the corner of Madison and South Main avenues in Pine Hills. She's lived for more than two decades a few blocks away in a two-family house that's being sold. But the new owner said she's been a good tenant and he has no intentions of evicting her from the rental property as she had feared. Rinaldi, who's been called a city landmark, had been telling pedestrians in recent weeks that she was worried she was going to have to move, threatening to end her 46-year streak as a crossing guard. "I was just so sick over the thought that I'd have to move and couldn't do this anymore," Rinaldi said one afternoon last week as she crossed children at her busy intersection walking from nearby Pine Hills Elementary School. She does not own a car and walks or uses the bus. She was sworn in at the Albany Police Department in 1962 and has been on the job ever since. The front of her faded blue winter cap carries her original silver city shield. "Assiduity," the city's motto and her own, is engraved on the shield. While walking a child across Madison Avenue in the mid-1980s, she was struck by a motorist and fractured her collarbone. She was back at the corner a few weeks later. Last spring, she fell and broke her leg in two places. She returned after a couple months of convalescence and now uses a cane. Half the neighborhood seems to be on a first-name basis with Edna, as she's universally known. She responds with a warm greeting in a reedy singsong voice and calls everyone "hon," regardless of age or gender. She still likes to spoil courteous children with candy bars she purchases at the CVS Pharmacy on the corner, where she's been a fixture for decades. "Everyone loves Edna, bless her heart," said Jim Damewood, manager of the CVS store. She brings employees baked goods. They help her to decipher medical paperwork and order a new rubber cane tip when the old one wears out. She was born and raised in Hoosick Falls and studied nursing briefly. Her husband, Ambrose Rinaldi, died in 1972 after working in a printing bindery for Albany County. They had no children. A niece who lives in the area helps her out. Rinaldi sometimes puts her medical training to use, checking on the extent of injuries and calling police after car accidents at her corner. She once saw an ambulance whose driver had fallen asleep crash into the lobby of the nearby Madison Theater. She said she has no intentions of stepping back from the action anytime soon. "I don't want to stay at home," she said. "I like people too much." Paul Grondahl can be reached at 454-5623 or by e-mail at pgrondahl@timesunion.com.
