Just a haircut, no shave, and forget the two bits

Times-Union - Youths get a free visit from a barber courtesy of a nonprofit, and it leaves them feeling like a million ALBANY -- Donte Beck prepared for his senior year of high school with a small, but important, ritual Sunday. The 17-year-old La Salle Institute senior, who starts school this week, got his hair cut. Now he feels ready to take on an academic year of hard work that will hopefully lead him to Morehouse University."There's something about having your overall appearance fresh or upkept that makes you want to work harder," he said. Beck was one of 82 young men who got a free haircut, courtesy of the Capital Region nonprofit Men Organized to Develop, Empower and Lead, Inc. Tyrell Hughes, MODEL's director, said his organization has been raising funds for weeks to take one small burden off Albany parents. "Parents already have expenses and costs with school supplies and clothing," he said. "The strain on each household is always going to be there, but we can come together to lessen it." Dozens of boys and teens swarmed around Bricks Barber Shop on Central Avenue for the event. Inside, the smell of rubbing alcohol and hair spray hung in the air. Clippers buzzed the scalps of young men who would soon show up for the first day of school, looking their best. Deryl McCray, Bricks co-owner, said the haircut is a small step toward helping students focus on their schoolwork. "Looking good makes you feel good and it helps your confidence," he said. "You want to fit in, not stand out." The boys who warmed the barber chairs appeared energized by the haircuts. For example, Savion Jackson, 7, said he felt good getting his hair cut and -- to complement it -- he plans on wearing his favorite Incredible Hulk T-shirt on the first day at Giffen Memorial Elementary School. Abdur Winchester, 10, was grateful that he could have his hair cut right just days before he starts fifth grade at Eagle Point Elementary School. "You feel great," he said, "for the ladies." The group set up a table to register the boys as they showed up. The maximum of 75 boys, on top of about 40 from a week ago, was exceeded within three hours, Hughes said. MODEL was created to give young men between the ages of 12 and 18 positive role models to whom they can look up, he said. The group meets after school a few times a week to play chess and basketball, but also to teach young men on the verge of entering the work force how to create a resume, tie a tie and conduct an interview. Sunday's haircutting session was an outreach to young urban males, at a critical point in their lives, when school and the streets tug at them. Hughes said the community service sets an example for the boys in his group, who were getting haircuts and hosting a picnic, by showing them the importance of helping others. "You learn from the successes and failures of people who look like you," Hughes said. Waldman can be reached at 454-5080 or by e-mail at swaldman@timesunion.com....
