A man arrested in northwest Reading yesterday is now behind bars in Adams County on charges of murdering another man there in 1981. Authorities say they picked up Elio Lua Barajas, 48, in the 600 block of Tulpehocken Street. Police say he stabbed Florintino Lua, 21, to death at a migrant labor camp near Gettysburg on October 16, 1981.

A man wanted for the murder of a man in northwest Reading over the weekend has turned himself in to Berks County sheriff's deputies. They picked up Enrique Vazquez, 18, at his attorney's office this morning, according to Sheriff Eric Weaknecht. Police say he shot and killed Jose Joel Mendez-Garcia, 26, at Tulpehocken and West Greenwich streets late Saturday afternoon.

Officials from the Wilson, Conrad Weiser, and Tulpehocken school districts worked with juvenile probation officials to offer an alternative to fining juvenile offenders. Police in Reading are still looking for the man responsible for a homicide in the city this weekend. 26 year old Jose Joel Mendez-Garcia was killed around 3:30 Saturday afternoon, at the corner of Tulpehocken and West Greenwich Streets. Police haven't said if his death was gang-related, but they say a fight did break out before the shooting, and may have led to the homicide.
