Injured musicians expected to fully recover

The State - AUGUSTA -- Performers Travis Barker and Adam Goldstein, AKA DJ AM, are in critical but stable condition, but are expected to make a full recovery after being injured in a plane crash Friday in Columbia, Dr. Fred Mullins, medical director of the Joseph M. Still Burn Center in Augusta, told reporters Sunday morning.The two entertainers have second- and third degree burns sustained in the crash of a Learjet on a runway at Columbia Metropolitan Airport in which four other people died.Barker was burned on his torso and lower body, and Goldstein has burns on his arm and head. The men do not have any other major injuries related to the plane crash, Mullins said. The men’s vital signs and general health are being monitored closely.“They’re doing as well as can be expected, given their injuries,"said Dr. Claus Brandigi, who treated the men Saturday.Burn injuries are not just painful -- they can restrict movement when they affect joints. Infections can also result because of skin loss. In general, internal and external burn injuries can take up to a year to heal....

The State - Updated 4:04 p.m.A private jet carrying six people crashed late Friday night at the Columbia Metropolitan Airport, killing four and injuring performers Travis Barker and his performing partner DJ-AM.The privately owned aircraft never got off the runway, crashing at the end near S.C. 302 around 11:55 p.m., airport spokesperson Lynne Douglas. The airport is currently closed to all arrivals and departures.Officials said the plane carrying six people was departing shortly before midnight Friday when air traffic controllers reporting seeing sparks. The plane hurtled off the end of a runway and crashed through antennas and a fence. It came to rest on an embankment across a five-lane highway and was engulfed in flames, said Debbie Hersman, a member of the National Transportation Safety Board.Barker and DJ-AM, whose real name is Adam Goldstein, were taken to the Joseph M. Still Burn Center in Augusta, hospital spokeswoman Beth Frits said. The State - A man, authorities say was a major suplier of crack and powder cocaine, has been sentenced to 30 years in prison.Samuel Rodney Holmes, 40, of Aikenwas sentenced in federal court in Columbia for violations of federal drug laws, according to U.S. Attorney Walk Wilkins. U.S. District Judge Margaret B. Seymour of Columbia sentenced Holmes to 30 years in prison, to be followed by a ten year term of supervised release. Holmes was convicted by a jury last year following a three-day trial. The evidence at trial showed that Holmes was a major supplier of crack and cocaine in the Aiken and Augusta areas. Holmes sold multi-kilogram quantities of cocaine to various Aiken-area drug dealers, and also converted large quantities of powder cocaine into crack for a fee. The case was investigated by agents of the Drug Enforcement Administration, the Aiken County Sheriff’s Office and the Aiken Department of Public Safety. Assistant United States Attorney Mark C. Moore of the Columbia office prosecuted the case....

Midlands gas prices hit another record; supplies remain tight

The State - Columbia-area gas prices rose overnight to yet another record high today, while Midlands drivers contended with restrictions on fill-ups at many stations because of limited fuel supplies.The region’s average price rose more than a dime overnight to $4.21 a gallon for regular, according to AAA data — behind only Asheville as the most expensive in the Carolinas and the most expensive in South Carolina by a dime.Midlands pump prices have risen 64 cents a gallon since Thursday.About half the area’s stations either had no gas or were out of some grades of fuel over the weekend. Distributors on Sunday were getting gas to some stations, but — at times — were delivering just partial loads. Stations that had gas typically were limiting drivers to 10-gallons or $50 per fill-up.Industry officials said large storage tanks in North Augusta that house gas bound for the Midlands were near dry over the weekend....
