The State - Lexington High running back Anthony Carden heads a list of 11 Midlands high school football players chosen to the North-South All-Star Game.Carden, who has 1,271 rushing yards this season, will play on the South team. This year’s game will be played at Myrtle Beach’s Doug Shaw Stadium Dec. 13. The South team is coached by Berkeley’s Jerry Brown. The State - Lexington-Richland 5 leaders say current and expected growth prompted a proposal for two new schools and a technology center in the Spring Hill neighborhood in the Dutch Fork area.Plans for the Richland County site, now roughly 110 acres at Broad River and Mount Vernon Church roads, have been a lightning rod for criticism for those opposed to the $243.7 million bond proposal on the Nov. 4 ballot, which would help pay for these facilities and renovations to others.At the heart of the argument is a dispute among some in Lexington-Richland 5 about how much the area near the site of the new middle and high schools will actually grow.But many planners in Lexington and Richland counties agree the site and the Dutch Fork area are prime for growth, primarily because there’s available land to take in spillover from fast-growing surrounding areas like Chapin.Dutch Fork, between Irmo and Chapin, grew to an estimated 36,000 people last year, up about 70 percent from the roughly 21,000 in 1990, according to Central Midlands Council of Governments....

Eleven candidates are running for school board, and there is also a $243.7 million bond proposal on the ballot. -- Tonight proponents of the bond proposal have called a debate with citizens of “Putting All Students First, a group that opposes the measure. The debate will happen 7:30 tonight at Dutch Fork High, 1400 Old Tamah Road, Irmo. -- Citizens have one final opportunity to meet with interim superintendent Herb Berg in community forums sponsored by Great Schools 08, a group supporting the measure.
