The Sun News - Myrtle Beach police are searching for someone who shot construction equipment near Wal-Mart on Oak Forest Lane, a police report showed.Police were called at 7:45 a.m. Wednesday to the C.L. Benton construction site where a supervisor told police that someone shot the equipment with a BB gun, police said. Windshield damage was estimated at $600 on the equipment....

Other teachers at the schools nominate the teachers for school-level teacher of the year based on professionalism, effectiveness, and commitment to the profession. Each school winner will complete an application for the title of Horry County Schools'Teacher of the Year. Applications are reviewed by a committee of educators, administrators and community representatives. Ten semifinalists will be notified on February 20, 2009 and then five finalists will be notified on March 9. The five finalists will be observed in their classrooms by committee members the week of March 23-31 and the county Teacher of the Year will be named at a banquet on May 5. School winners are:...

Florence man charged in steak theft

The Sun News - A 40-year-old Florence man was arrested Wednesday afternoon for trying to steal four steaks from Wal-Mart, a police report showed.Billy Randolph Fisher was charged with third-offense shoplifting after he was stopped by a loss prevention employee just before 5 p.m. at the store on Oak Forest Lane, the report showed.The employee told police he saw a man go to the produce section of the store and put four packages of steaks in a bag and tried to walk out of the store with them, the report showed. The steaks were valued at $60.68 and returned to the store....

The State - Hilton Head Island already has its own development rules on one of its most congested beaches.Officials imposed restrictions at Forest Beach about two years ago to keep buildings from being built too close to the water. People can build dune walkovers and, in some cases, swimming pools near the beach but not new buildings.Some call the rules a test run for what the council is considering next: applying laws that are stricter than the state’s to the entire island.Not everyone is happy with the rules at Forest Beach.Mike Notartomaso says the state has been fair in its regulation of development, but the town went too far in 2006....

Van Winkle concedes Horry seat

The Sun News - Keith Van Winkle, the Republican challenger who narrowly lost to incumbent Democrat Marion Foxworth for the Horry County Council seat in District 3, on Tuesday conceded losing the election - putting an end to one of the most heated local races this political season.Van Winkle confirmed the authenticity of a statement e-mailed on his behalf earlier in the day that congratulated Foxworth on his victory. Van Winkle lost to Foxworth by 81 votes out of about 10,000 cast in the district, which includes the southern portion of Myrtle Beach and most of Carolina Forest.A recount held after the election upheld Foxworth's victory. Unofficial results after Election Day put Foxworth ahead by 78 votes....
