Outlaw and Bruce Reeves; and Lexington (1 seat), Melvin Amundson, Beth Burn, Jan Hammond, Kevin Kibler, Jeff Knowles and Ed Smith.Paula Hite is not seeking re-election, and the seat held by the late Jerry Fowler is open. The district is seeking a $243.7 million bond referendum to build several new schools and renovate others. Given the current economic climate, do you agree with the district's plans for a referendum now?RICHLANDBrown: I agree with district for having the bond referendum for improvements, but not for building new schools. I would like to see all schools that need improvements/renovations to get everything they need. I would like to see all of the portable classrooms removed and new buildings built in their newly vacated spaces. We are literally on the verge of a recession, and I do not believe we should be attempting to borrow almost a quarter of a billion dollars right now....

Oak tree runs out of appeals Found: 2 Months 1 Week 1 Day 6 Hours 9 Minutes ago The State - After city arborists, two independent tree experts and ground-penetrating radar weren’t enough, it took a supersonic air spade to deliver a death sentence for a 30-year-old oak tree on Main Street.“The only thing holding this tree up is the grace of God,” arborist Peter Herlan, pronounced Friday morning to a group of city officials and Main Street merchants who looked on.But as city crews were taking the tree down, a second tree just up the street was spared the chain saw after Herlan found surprisingly thick roots running deep under the brick sidewalk. It was a partial victory for Main Street merchants and residents who were concerned the city was not doing enough to save the towering oak trees that blanket the 1500 block with shade. The city plans to take down about 300 of the 48,000 trees it maintains this year. It is planting 500 trees....
Gaston deals with collard emergency Found: 2 Months 1 Week 1 Day 6 Hours 14 Minutes ago The State - The town of Gaston, reeling from being flat broke because of government corruption, almost missed out on its biggest annual fundraiser and feel-good event. The Collard Festival found itself without the prime attraction for this weekend’s event when donated collards went bad last month.A shortage of volunteers to cook and prepare the leafy member of the cabbage family caused the problem, interim Mayor Troy Bivens said Friday.“We had to throw 600 pounds of collards in the Dumpster,” Bivens said. “This is bad. You have the 26th annual Collard Festival and you have no collards.”The collards have an even bigger role this year in the financial health of the community of 1,500 people....
