I’m only getting started.”It was an interesting start. Mehrzad surprised many local leaders when he applied to the national Waterkeeper Alliance for the Congaree riverkeeper position. A committee of politicians, conservationists and river users hoped to put together its own application by mid-2009.On Tuesday, the alliance board approved Mehrzad’s application. The Waterkeeper Alliance puts more stock in independence and motivation than in the blessing of a local committee, said board member Donna Lisenby, the Watauga (N.C.) riverkeeper.“The community needs to know the riverkeeper speaks for the river and isn’t beholden to any political leader,” said Lisenby, who met with Mehrzad on Monday. “Alan comes across as not only thoughtful but very motivated.”...
