To protect and serve'
Found: 1 Week 2 Days 3 Hours 42 Minutes ago
The Spectrum - BY JENNIFER WEAVERjeweaver@thespectrum.comCEDAR CITY- 'To protect and serve the public'took on a new meaning Saturday at Lupita's Mexican Restaurant with Cedar City Officer Justin Chappell warning customers about hot plates and verifying tamales and burrito orders before placing them on tables for the annual Tip-A-Cop event."I enjoy it,"said Chappell. "Giving back to the community in a way that lets people know we're human and have hearts that go out to children in need is good as officers, and it's fun to provide kids the opportunity to have a Christmas."The special service by officers ended Saturday evening after two weekends of law enforcement taking on the roles of waiters and waitresses at Applebee's, Chili's, Wingers and Lupita's to earn tips for the Shop with a Cop program. For close to two decades, the public safety personnel of Iron County have been matched with children younger than 12 who are referred by their teachers to embark as consumers at the local Wal-Mart for an early Christmas experience."We rely on the school district and each of the nine elementaries in Iron County to nominate 10 children each that are in real need,"said Sgt. Darin Adams. "Most of the teachers know the family situations of the children, so they let us know if the family is struggling with a lost family member or lost job, and we screen the referrals."If referred children have participated in the program before, they are typically rotated out for others to take part, Adams said. Last year, 73 children were treated to a day of shopping. This year, 113 have been accepted to a free breakfast provided by the Elks Lodge. They then will take a ride in an emergency response vehicle procession and spend $100 gift certificates each on Dec. 13. The act of charity impressed Tammy Gieseking of Las Vegas, who was enjoying a meal at Lupita's that was served by Chappell."I think it's a really cool idea,"she said.Debbie Robb of Cedar City said her family supports Tip-A-Cop every year and looks forward to seeing the officers exercise their customer service skills. Her mother, Linda Milianta, is a teacher at North Elementary School. She said she has witnessed firsthand how the money collected at Tip-A-Cop transfers into a life-changing experience for children chosen to shop with a cop."They get up early, and they hear the sirens, and they know it's time to go shopping with a cop,"Milianta said. "I get to hear the stories of what the children bought and about their new officer friend and see the excitement and joy the entire experience brings to their lives. It's definitely a worthy cause."Volunteer in Policing coordinator Mark Browne smiles as he remembers the 8-year-old child he went shopping with last year."It was a lot of fun, and there's nothing like seeing a child happy,"he said....
