Vermonters stand ready for hurricane relief Found: 1 Month 1 Week 3 Days 19 Hours 46 Minutes ago Burlington Free Press - Vermont ambulance crews were on the outer edges of Hurricane Gustav Monday, waiting for the storm to simmer down before entering some of the hardest hit areas.Gustav slammed into Louisiana west of New Orleans Monday morning with 110 mph winds. Federal emergency officials said conditions were too rough in the heart of the hurricane zone early Monday afternoon to fully assess damage and injuries.Jake Frey, a member of the Barre Town Ambulance crew, was in Gulfport, Miss., Monday helping with calls and standing by. He said wind gusts had reached 65 mph in Gulfport, but had calmed to about 40 mph in the afternoon."I think it's a lot more organized this time,"Frey said. He'd been in areas devastated by Hurricane Rita, which slammed east Texas and western Louisiana a month after Katrina in 2005. "It seems like the Mississippi authorities, along with FEMA, seem to be much more organized. I think a lot of lessons were taught,"he said.Frey said he was awaiting word on where local emergency managers wanted him to go.The same was true for Greg Wolf, president of Essex Rescue. He and other members of Essex Rescue were further north Monday near Jackson, Miss. He said conditions weren't bad there, with some wind and heavy rain. He said ambulance crews from Enosburg, Derby Line, Newport and Stowe were also sprinkled around Mississippi.Wolf said Vermont ambulance crews would be in the hurricane zone until at least Wednesday or Thursday, when FEMA would decide whether to keep them in the area or not....
