Convention convenes: Democrats strive for unity
Found: 1 Month 2 Weeks 2 Days 22 Hours 45 Minutes ago
Fond du lac Reporter - DENVER - Party unity is a key theme here as presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama moves to win over disappointed backers of primary rival Hillary Rodham Clinton. But at least one Wisconsin Clinton supporter, Debra Bartoshevich of Waterford, says she cant be won over. Bartoshevich, whom the Wisconsin Democratic Party removed from the convention delegation in July, made good on her threat Monday to back Republican John McCain and appears in a new McCain campaign ad entitled Debra. She says McCain has the same experience and leadership qualities she saw in Clinton. In the ad, Bartoshevich says, a lot of Democrats will vote for McCain. Thats okay. Lt. Gov. Barbara Lawton of Algoma wont be one of them. Lawton, who was Clintons coordinator for Wisconsin and the Midwest, said she would work for an Obama victory in Wisconsin. She said she and Rep. Tammy Baldwin, a Clinton superdelegate, have worked with the Obama campaign on reaching out to Clinton supporters. Lawton said it would take time for everyone to get on board. Im very impressed with the determination and leadership of Clinton supporters in making sure that Obama becomes president, Lawton said. By nominating Obama as the first black major party presidential candidate, Democrats will fulfill the promise of the 1960s civil rights movement, Lawton said. Baldwin of Madison told reporters in a conference call, I am amazed how much attention is given to a solitary person when asked about Bartoshevich. Baldwin and Gov. Jim Doyle were on the conference call to tout Obamas economic proposals and highlight topics they plan to include in their convention speeches on Tuesday. Nancy Nusbaum, a Clinton delegate from De Pere, said Obama is a strong candidate. Barack Obama didnt get to be our nominee because hes weak, Nusbaum said. Hes a very strong person. Clinton delegates Tony Vanderbloemen of Green Bay, and Robert Yingst of Abrams, said its time for Democrats to take the Obama campaigns chant of fired up and ready to go to heart. Ive been a Hillary supporter from the very beginning, Yingst said. At first, I thought Hillary should be his (vice presidential) pick. Hes winning me over by the organization that he has and his willingness to pick someone like (Sen. Joe) Biden, who criticized him. Yingst acknowledged there are a lot of hurt feelings but said Clinton supporters should ask themselves what McCain has to offer the country. Vanderbloemen sported a Hillary Clinton campaign cap and said he would vote for Clinton on a roll call vote, billed as a symbolic acknowledgement of Clintons historic run. But come November, Vanderbloemen will be an Obama man. I think Obama will do great things to restore the economy, he said. Itll be easy to vote for Obama, but it will be difficult not voting for Hillary....
