Having a ballMen's basketball: Andrist still having a ball Found: 2 Days 8 Hours 10 Minutes ago Leader-Telegram - Eddie Andrist knows you won't believe him, but he'll say it anyway. He had fun last year."One of the things I learned a long time ago in this business is that there's a lot of other things to focus on than wins and losses," said Andrist, entering his ninth year as the UW-Stout men's basketball coach and his 19th season overall. "We worked very hard last year, and we had a nice end to the season. I thought we played really well."I really had fun. I enjoyed the process. I enjoyed working with our guys. I enjoyed the intensity. I enjoyed their focus on the games. I'm just having a blast. I really enjoy working with the guys."And while it didn't have an affect on UW-Stout's record (7-19, 4-12) and while it was his worst year in terms of wins and losses at the collegiate level, it certainly fueled his desire to coach again this season."Struggling is in the mind of the beholder," Andrist said. "We're going to work very hard in our system, play a good brand of basketball, and be very entertaining. And we'll see what happens."The Blue Devils will have to replace Miles Webb, who tied for the conference lead in scoring (19.0 points per game) in his only season with the Blue Devils. But UW-Stout returns plenty of experience, including junior Jerrel Enerson-Matthews, who was all-WIAC honorable mention as a freshman, and starting point guard Alex Mason. Mason's status is in doubt, however. He left Saturday's season-opener against Buena Vista in the first half and didn't return. He's still being evaluated. Also back are a handful of regulars, including senior John Donald, junior Josh Huettl, sophomore Jerrod Buchholtz and sophomore Eric Hostetter. There's also several newcomers, including three who should make an immediate impact. James Adams and Mahlon Thomas, both 6-foot-6, will give the Blue Devils more of a presence down low. Nathan Staidl - who is generously listed at 5-foot-9 - will backup Mason at point guard and gives UW-Stout a bulldog-attitude in the backcourt. If Mason can't play, Staidl may be in the starting lineup."This could be another tough year," Andrist said. "We have a lot of new faces, a lot of guys that are struggling in our system. It could be another tough year for us."But we're excited about where we are going."...

Also led team in rebounds (7.3) and field goal percentage (60.6). Shea was second on team in scoring (37.6) as a freshman. Boone will replace graduated Zack Ryan as starting point guard. Prince (Chippewa Falls) started in the exhibition game against UW-Green Bay. Former Eleva-Strum coach Rich Roginski joins team as an assistant.- Outlook: A deeper, more-experienced Blugolds team may not have as many matchup problems as it did last year. Enerson-Matthews has started since his freshman season. Andris expects newcomers Thomas and Adams to make immediate impact. Graduated Miles Webb, who tied for WIAC lead in scoring (19.0) but took 390 shots, 96 more than Enerson-Matthews and 221 more than the next-highest total (Mason). Huettl (Regis) and Buchholtz (Durand) are the lone area products on the roster.- Outlook: It wasn't the best season for the Blue Devils last year, and if they can't figure out how to defend, this year won't be much better. The defense looked improved in an overtime loss to Buena Vista, but whether or not they can carry that into WIAC play remains to be seen.- Schedule: November 21-22 - at Wartburg Tourney in Waverly, Iowa. 29-30 - UW-Stout Tournament.December 6 - at UW-Eau Claire, 3 p.m. 10 - at UW-River Falls. 13 - UW-Oshkosh, 3 p.m.; 20 - vs. Goucher College at Puerto Rico Tournament 21 - vs. College of the Ozarks at Puerto Rico Tournament.January 3 - at UW-Platteville, 1 p.m. 7 - Ripon College, 7 p.m. 10 - at UW-La Crosse. 14 - at UW-Stevens Point, 7 p.m. 17 - UW-Whitewater, 1 p.m. 21 - UW-Superior, 7 p.m. 24 - UW-Platteville, 1 p.m. 27 - at Silver Lake College, 7 p.m. 31 - at UW-Oshkosh, 1 p.m.February 4 - UW-Stevens Point, 7 p.m. 7 - at UW-Whitewater, 1 p.m. 11 - at UW-Superior, 7 p.m. 14 - UW-La Crosse, 3 p.m. 18 - UW-River Falls, 7 p.m. 21 - UW-Eau Claire, 3 p.m. 24 - WIAC playoffs.UW-La Crosse- Head coach: Ken Koelbl, sixth season (68-63).- Last season: 11-15, 6-10.- Top players: Tony Mane, soph., 6-0, G; Brandon Brown, sr., 6-0, G; Andrew Haass, jr., 6-5, F.- Notes: Mane scored at least 20 points in 12 games last year and matched WIAC tournament record with 37 points against UW-Stevens Point. Brown tied for school lead in steals (137). Matt DeMars (Regis) will see more playing time. Graduated three of top four scorers. Keep an eye on transfer Trevor Stratton (Carroll). - Outlook: The Eagles are a bit of an unknown. Mane can score and Brown was solid last year, but if the newcomers can make an impact, UW-La Crosse could move up the standings.UW-Oshkosh- Head coach: Ted Van Dellen, 19th season (316-165).- Last season: 17-9, 11-5.- Top players: Dane Seckar-Anderson, sr., 6-7, F; D.J. Marsh, jr., 6-4, F; Matt Miller, sr., 5-9, G.- Notes: Started the same five players every game last season. Four return, but Greg Schrimpf (7.9 ppg) probably will miss season with an injury. Ranked No. 7 in d3hoops.com preseason poll. Upset Division I Bradley, 84-79, in exhibition game Nov. 9. Will be without starting PG Josh Langenfeld (knee) until January. Versatile Lohoff may assume point duties. Skemp is a fifth-year senior. Led WIAC in rebounding (8.3) and field goal percentage (64.7). Team went on offseason trip to Ireland in May.- Outlook: UW-Whitewater is getting all the attention, but UW-Platteville may have better players. If Langenfeld can come back, a WIAC title is a possibility.UW-River Falls- Head coach: Jeff Berhkof, third season (19-32).- Last season: 9-16, 3-13.- Top players: Wade Guerin, soph., 6-8, F; Jontae Koonkaew, soph., 5-9, G; Spencer Shelman, jr., 6-3, G.- Notes: Graduated four starters and top five scorers from last-place team in WIAC. Koonkaew scored 13.2 ppg in 2006-'07 but missed all of last season with an injury. Shelman is a transfer from Iowa Central CC. Collin Cooper (Eau Claire Memorial) is a freshman on the roster.- Outlook: The Falcons haven't won more than five WIAC games since the 2003-'04 season. Look for that trend to continue.UW-Stevens Point- Head coach: Bob Semling, fourth season (66-20).- Last season: 23-7, 12-4.- Top players: Pete Rortvedt, sr., 6-5, F; Bryan Beamish, sr., 6-6, F; Khalifa El-Amin, sr., 5-8, G.- Notes: Rortvedt and Beamish were first-team all-WIAC. Semling said Rortvedt (12.3 ppg, 4.3 rpg in 2007-'08) had just one full week of practice last season. Semling was a three-year starter at QB at UW-Eau Claire and was an assistant for Ken Anderson and the men's basketball team. Ranked No. 6 in d3hoops.com preseason poll. Led nation in assist-turnover ratio (1.54) and was sixth in scoring margin (+13.7).- Outlook: The Pointers return quite a bit from last year's team which had a disappointing exit in the second round of the NCAA tournament. They'll be hungry to advance further this season.UW-Superior- Head coach: Dave Buchanan, third season (19-33).- Last season: 12-15, 6-10.- Top players: Jake Smith, soph., 6-0, F; Dwight Hill, jr., 5-9, G; Shane Manor, soph., 6-6, F.- Notes: Return all five starters and top seven scorers from its best team since 2000-'01. Advanced to semifinals of WIAC tournament for first time since 1999-2000, losing to UW-Whitewater in OT. Smith was first-team all-WIAC as a freshman. Manor (Altoona) and Hill were honorable mention. Lost season opener, 79-72, at Martin Luther (Minn.) Dan Culy (Rice Lake) had 29 points. Junior college transfer Ryan Ostendorf (6-4) will make immediate impact.- Outlook: Buchanan is proof that you can take a cellar-dwellar and make it an overnight competitor in the WIAC. The Yellowjacks may still be one year away, but nobody is taking them for granted anymore.UW-Whitewater- Head coach: Pat Miller, eighth season (146-49).- Last season: 24-5, 13-3.- Top players: Matt Goodwin, sr., 6-1, G; Kori Vernon, sr., 6-6, F; Myles McKay, sr., 6-3, G; Billy Kolinske, sr., 6-6, F.- Notes: Ranked No. 4 in the d3hoops.com preseason poll. Earned all but one first-place vote (UW-Platteville) in WIAC preseason poll. Return four starters, including WIAC player of the year Goodwin (17.8 ppg). Won WIAC title and WIAC tournament title. Lost to Loras College, 71-70, in first round of NCAA tournament. Transfers Chris Vines and Tyson Kingsby will add depth. - Outlook: The Warhawks aren't going anywhere as long as Miller is at the helm. With Goodwin back, expect another top-of-the-pack finish.- John Casper Jr....
