UWSPs Treehaven field station hires new ecologist Found: 2 Weeks 5 Days 23 Hours 36 Minutes ago Stevens Point Journal - Kevin Burns, a longtime forester with over 29 years of experience managing client forestlands throughout Minnesota, Wisconsin and Michigan, has been named the new Vallier Treehaven resident ecologist at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point (UWSP). A UWSP alumnus and 25-year Army veteran who received the Bronze Star for duty in support of Iraqi Freedom III, Burns begins his three-year appointment at Treehaven this month.Kevin will greatly enhance our students educational experience at Treehaven, said Christine Thomas, dean of the College of Natural Resources (CNR). We welcome him to our faculty and will give him the resources necessary to keep Treehavens mission relevant in a changing, global economy. Burns succeeds Tom Hayes who held the position since 2005.
Prior to joining Treehaven and the CNR, Burns was technical services manager for Forest Resource Services of Gaylord, Mich. Here he was responsible for planning and designing complex forest resource inventories, as well as for sales of forestry software and equipment. He is credited with developing a variety of custom computer applications and information management systems to efficiently and accurately manage client forestry operations.
From 2000 through 2007 Burns held various forest manager positions at several private sector firms in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. From 1991 through 2000 he was the forest manager for B-Squared Inc., a forestry consulting firm based in Rosholt.
He received his associate of arts degree at Gogebic Community College in Ironwood, Mich., and his bachelors and masters degrees from UWSP. His academic emphasis at UWSP was forestry, forestry administration, and forest and wildlife management. He served as assistant lecturer for the CNRs summer field training sessions at Treehaven in both 2004 and 2006.
Burns position is the only one at UWSP that is completely funded through the UWSP Foundation, thanks to funds committed by the Dorothy Kopmeier Vallier Foundation of Milwaukee. Representing the family as a Vallier Foundation trustee, William Kummer, son of Dorothy Vallier, is among UWSPs most active volunteers, serving on the UWSP Foundation Board, the Treehaven Board of Advisors, and the CNR Advisory Board.
Treehaven, a 1,400-acre residential natural resources education and conference facility located between Rhinelander and Tomahawk, is owned and operated by the UWSP College of Natural Resources. Founded in 1985, Treehavens mission is to provide natural resource and environmental education to students, community, and others interested in nature. It is one of four field stations operated by UWSP. To learn more about Treehaven please visit www.uwsp.edu/cnr/treehaven....

Close, but no cigarUW-Whitewater 16, UW-Eau Claire 14: Close, but no ... Found: 3 Weeks 2 Days 14 Hours 8 Minutes ago Leader-Telegram - UW-Eau Claire coach Todd Glaser has a 24-hour rule for his football team. The Blugolds can enjoy a win for one day. And they can beat themselves up over a loss for one day. That philosophy should come in handy this week because the Blugolds probably won't want to dwell on just how close they came to beating UW-Whitewater on Saturday.UW-Eau Claire had its chances to beat the defending Division III national champions but couldn't capitalize in a 16-14 home-opening and conference-opening loss at Carson Park on a rainy and overcast day. "You can play 'What if?' all day," Glaser said. "But it's something we have to learn from."The most costly miscue seemed to be a third-quarter fumble by Tyler Moy on the 5-yard line. Momentum was squarely on the side of the Blugolds (1-1, 0-1 WIAC), who were leading 7-6 and smelling the end zone once more. Facing a third-and-8 from the UW-Whitewater 18, quarterback Kyle Paulson hit Moy at the 5. But the ball squirted free after the catch and was scooped up by the Warhawks' Max Ford.Showing the killer instinct of a national champ, UW-Whitewater punished UW-Eau Claire by marching 95 yards in 12 plays for the go-ahead touchdown. That came courtesy of true freshman running back Levell Coppage, who scampered into the end zone from 2 yards out.Still seemingly reeling from the momentum switch, the Blugolds went three-and-out on offense and gave the ball right back to the Warhawks (2-0, 1-0). The preseason WIAC favorites responded by putting together a 13-play scoring drive, this one culminating with Jeff Schebler's third field goal of the game."It was a test for our guys to play a good team like this on the road and sustain a long drive like that and answer the bell like that," UW-Whitewater coach Lance Leipold said. Schebler's 47-yarder with 7 minutes, 16 seconds to play gave the Warhawks a two-score lead. It also made a missed 48-yard, first-half field goal attempt by the Blugolds' Craig Kolb loom large. Those squandered points aside, UW-Eau Claire still had a chance to win the game in its closing minutes.Paulson fired a 12-yard touchdown strike to Spencer Kehoe with 4:28 left to draw the Blugolds within two. And after the defense forced an immediate three-and-out, Kris Rosholt shanked a 29-yard punt that gave UW-Eau Claire the ball at its own 43 with 3:29 to play. But the Blugolds weren't able to give Kolb another chance. Matt McCulloch intercepted Paulson to end the drive, and the Warhawks put the game on ice by picking up a pair of first downs. "It's disappointing," Glaser said. "We had our opportunities and we didn't get some points out of it. We said when we went into the game that they're a very good team and you have to take advantage of all the opportunities you get. We didn't do that today."UW-Eau Claire came into the game with two primary goals: to establish the run and keep the score low. The Blugolds accomplished both to some degree. Despite giving up 361 yards of total offense, they held the Warhawks in check on the scoreboard. And for stretches, UW-Eau Claire was successful on the ground. Cory Sartorelli gained 112 carries on 24 carries - making him 2-for-2 in 100-yard games this season."The line's been blocking real hard and getting off the ball real well," said Sartorelli, who gave the Blugolds a 7-6 lead with a 1-yard touchdown plunge in the third quarter. "I've been fortunate with that. I've been getting enough touches to do that."NotesThe Blugolds lost to the Warhawks for the sixth consecutive season ... UW-Whitewater now has won 22 straight WIAC games. ... Coppage, who's taking over for graduated Gagliardi Trophy winner Justin Beaver, ran for 220 yards and a touchdown. He averaged 5.2 yards per carry. ... Craig Polifka intercepted Jeff Donovan on the second play of the third quarter. Polifka returned it 30 yards to the UW-Whitewater 5, setting up Sartorelli's touchdown three plays later. "We watched tape and knew that they ran that three-step route on that side," Polifka said. "I was waiting for it the whole game."uw-whitewater 16,
