Beginners aquaculture workshops held this fall in Star Prairie and ... Found: 3 Weeks 2 Days 21 Hours 25 Minutes ago Stevens Point Journal - The University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point is offering beginning aquaculture workshops sponsored by the UWSP Northern Aquaculture Demonstration Facility (NADF), the University of Wisconsin-Extension (UWEX) and the Wisconsin Aquaculture Association (WAA). Workshops will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, September 27, in Star Prairie, at the Star Prairie Community Center, 200 Bridge Ave., and on Saturday, October 25, in Elton at the Town Hall, W4811 State Hwy. 64. The workshops are tailored to introduce people to Wisconsins growing aquacultureindustry and provide an overview from a small business perspective on how to start and operate a fish farm.
These workshops offer an opportunity for large, commercial-scale farms to backyard pond enthusiasts to learn how to start up a fish farm. Aquaculture is the fastest growing segment of agriculture in the world and Wisconsin is primed to be a bigger player in this growing world market, said Chris Hartleb, NADF co-director and professor of biology.
Workshops will begin with morning presentations and include sessions on Wisconsin Aquaculture, Starting a Fish Farm, Economics/Business Planning, and Rules and Regulations. Participants will receive packets of information and a CD containing the presentations and economic worksheets.
The workshops will be conducted by UW-Extension aquaculture specialists. An afternoon tour of the sponsoring farm will give participants the opportunityto see firsthand how a fish farm operates and to ask owners questions about their operation. The September workshop is sponsored by the Star Prairie Trout Farm and the October workshop is sponsored by Silver Moon Springs in Elton.
These are the first of six workshops held around the state in conjunction with the states extension districts and will incorporate farms that specialize in pond culture, raceways and Recirculation Aquaculture Systems (RAS). Wisconsins $7 million aquaculture industry is very diverse with more than 150 commercial farms raising fish for food, stocking, bait and recreational fee fishing.
Registration for the all-day workshop is $35 per person and includes breaks, lunch, farm tour, handout materials, and a one-year associate membership with WAA.

Stanley park could be nixedStanley animal park could be nixed Found: 1 Month 6 Days 22 Hours 13 Minutes ago Leader-Telegram - Deer and elk exhibits in Chapman Park in Stanley could close next year if a proposal by a council member moves forward.Alderman Carl Edwardson suggested the council explore the possibility of eliminating the animal park, which generally has about six deer and six elk. The council talked about the idea at its meeting Tuesday."It was discussed, but there was no decision at this time," Mayor David Jankoski said. "They are looking at cost factors."The deer park dates to the 1950s, Jankoski said. The city regularly culls the animals to keep the numbers at about six each.Jankoski said he would want to know how much the exhibits cost the city in terms of labor, feed and veterinary bills before moving forward."Before we make a decision, we want some opinion from the community," Jankoski said. "We're gathering the information first."Council member Roxanne Caswell, who is chairwoman of the parks and cemetery committee, doesn't like the idea of eliminating the animals. "My feeling is we don't want to do anything like that," Caswell said. Because of the fears of chronic wasting disease - a brain illness in deer - the city has not been able to move any of its animals. However, that should change beginning next year because the city has been in the CWD monitoring program for six years, Caswell said."I explained to (Edwardson) that in 2009 we can transfer deer in and out of the park easier," Caswell said.Chapman Park totals 81 acres, and the pens for the deer and elk are small, Caswell said.Jankoski said a lot of children like to watch the animals."I know the elk are probably a bigger attraction to people," Jankoski said. "They come up closer to the fence. And I think the elk are more beautiful."City implements room taxThe council voted Tuesday to create a 3 percent room tax on hotels and motels in the city, Jankoski said. The money collected would go toward tourism and promotional events in the city, from its Watermelon Festival to the annual Stanley Rodeo, or pay for membership to local tourism groups."We're looking to implement (the tax) in January," Jankoski said.Jankoski has appointed a five-member tourism commission, which will oversee how the hotel tax is spent. Council member Lynn Mason was appointed to the commission.Vetter can be reached at 723-0303 or chris.vetter@ecpc.com....
