Cardinals find the answers in victoryDairyland: Eleva-Strum finds ... Found: 4 Weeks 1 Day 10 Hours 37 Minutes ago Leader-Telegram - It didn't matter what Independence/Gilmanton threw at rival Eleva-Strum on Thursday night. The Cardinals had an answer every time. Josh Segerstrom rushed for a game-high 163 yards and two game-changing touchdowns as the Cardinals secured a 33-20 victory over the Indees and finished in a tie with Whitehall for second in the conference standings.Segerstrom scored on a
49-yard run in the second quarter to cut the Indees' lead to 12-6 and on a
22-yard jaunt in the third that spurred a game-winning
20-point outburst for the Cardinals (7-2, 5-2)."That first half we battled it out," Eleva-Strum coach Warren Behm said. "Our kids grew up a lot in this game."Ryan Guza ran for a 5-yard score and hit Jordan Reidt for another, and Marty Guza scored on a 13-yard run to account for all of the Indees' scoring. The Cardinals' Jacob Asher scored the eventual game-winner on a 56-yard run in the third quarter, and Jared Bechel padded the lead with 46 yarder in the fourth. Blair-Taylor 38, Alma Center Lincoln 0: The Wildcats scored all 38 points by halftime as they completed a worst-to-first finish and capped a perfect conference slate.Jordan Tenneson ran for 95 yards and two touchdowns and Reed Waldera added 89 and a score for Blair-Taylor

Teams improve in 2008Ron Buckli column: Blair-Taylor, others made big ... Found: 1 Month 1 Hour 47 Minutes ago Leader-Telegram - It is said the mark of a champion is his ability to get up after he is knocked down. That happens with teams as well as individuals.Case-in-point, Blair-Taylor. The Wildcats won once last year - over winless Alma Center Lincoln. It was a victory that kept them out of the Dairyland basement. This year somebody must have turned the standings upside-down. It shows Blair-Taylor first and the undisputed Dairyland champion - following state champion Eleva-Strum. It's true. There have been some other notable turnarounds in northwest Wisconsin football. Webster has gone from 1-8 to a current 7-1 and a tie for second in the Large Lakeland.St. Croix Central was 2-7 in 2007 and is 6-2 a year later. Northwestern has gone from 1-8 to 5-3, St. Croix Falls from 4-5 to 8-0 and Osseo-Fairchild from 1-8 to 4-4.And locally, Altoona has turned last year's 2-7 into 4-4 and even better, Eau Claire Regis is 5-3 after going 2-7 last year. When it comes to the playoffs, last year's spectators will be this years participants.Playing the Numbers Game:0 - Losses for Chippewa Falls, wins for Memorial.1 - Blocked punt to go along with 130 rushing yards and three TDs for Michael Adams of Chippewa Falls.2 - Hank Kujak TD passes that gave Blair-Taylor its win.3 - Ties most losses for Menomonie in 17 years.5 - Touchdowns scored by River Falls' Levi Johnson in the first half. 6 - Shutouts posted last weekend.10 - Running clocks.14 - Enough points for Durand to clinch playoff spot.15 - Wins in past 16 games for Chippewa Falls.21 - Seconds remaining when New Auburn's Ian Ziperski takes TD pass to beat Cornell.47 - Points scored by Mondovi in first half.56.8 - Yards per carry for Bruce's Kurt Johnson on four attempts.60 - Points scored by the Baldwin-Woodville express.63 - TD run by Spring Valley's Tyler Bosshart.64 - TD run by Spring Valley's Tyler Bosshart.66 - Luke Brown's TD punt return - his second of the game - for St. Croix Central.70 - Yards return of a fumble for a TD by Avery Sega of Memorial.80 - TD run by Spring Valley's Tyler Bosshart.86 - Spencer Olejniczak's TD run for Thorp.89 - Joey Hamblin's TD return of an intercepted pass for Hayward.90 - Yards for a TD by Elk Mound's Derek Sousa on kickoff return.160 - Yards rushing for Owen-Withee's Zach Pomputis.175 - Yards rushing for Hayward's Bucky Dixon.223 - Matching passing yards for Altoona's Brodie Johnson and Osseo-Fairchild's Matt Vold in head-to-head play.227 - Kurt Johnson's rushing yardage.270 - Total yards winner Hayward outgained by Bloomer.300 - Yards rushing for Spring Valley's Tyler Bosshart.338 - Points piled up by Colby.339 - Kurt Johnson's yards receiving and rushing for Bruce.347 - Yards rushing and passing for Altoona's Brodie Johnson.569 - Total yards amassed by Bloomer in defeat.570 - Jarrod Martell's yards gained receiving for McDonell.1.000 - Winning percentage of seven remaining unbeatens (Chippewa Falls, Baldwin-Woodville, Hayward, St. Croix Falls, Shell Lake, Colby, Plum City)....

Ground game can lead to winsRon Buckli column: Teams ride 100-yard ... Found: 1 Month 6 Days 23 Hours 51 Minutes ago Leader-Telegram - You've heard it before. When Ryan Grant rushes for 100 yards, the Packers win. The same can be said of P.J. Hill of the Badgers. And so on.Point being, it is said the team that controls the line of scrimmage, controls the clock and controls the game.It is a fact that was borne out in northwest Wisconsin high school football last weekend. In games reported to the L-T, there were 21 backs who topped 100 yards. All but two played on winning teams. The ground hogs included Jake Wilson (131) of Menomonie, Andy Edholm (143) of Hudson, Bucky Dixon (194) of Hayward, Kyle Hetke (124) of Chetek, Cody Ninneman (111) of Baldwin-Woodville, Ryan Bechel (114) of Elmwood, Taylor Turene (165) of Thorp, Paul Reit (110) of Stanley-Boyd, Tyler Bosshart (138) of Spring Valley and Jake Espeseth (207) of Clear Lake. Some teams doubled up on their opponents. Whitehall did it with Chad Stellfplug (138) and Kevin Berg (117), Bloomer with Trevor Morning (119) and Jordan Koehler (112), New Auburn with Caleb Trowbridge (177) and Kaleb Schulner (104) and Owen-Withee with Zach Pomputis (236) and Dave Simenson (154).Those who played on losing teams were Nathan Weltzin (150) of Cumberland and Cody Olson (133) of Cornell.Of course, some backs have more opportunity than others. For instance, Owen-Withee doesn't even spike the ball to stop the clock. The Blackhawks rushed 64 times for 441 yards in the 36-0 win over Loyal. If you think that was something, try Bloomer. These Blackhawks ran 44 times for 407 yards. Good, but not exactly a record. But get a load of this. They added 199 yards in the air, thanks to Jon Barlow, to total 606 yards. That is a season's worth for many teams. There are always exceptions to the rushing rule. Chippewa Falls got outrushed by Rice Lake 201-54. And won. Thanks to Mitch Olson's 257-yard aerial assault.Cutting it closeThere were seven games decided by a touchdown or less and that included Durand's 21-20 win over Amery and Chetek's 14-10 win over Ladysmith. Both teams had to come from behind.Kyle Hetke's 7-yard TD run with 7 minutes, 19 seconds to play was good for Chetek while the Durand win was a little tighter. Cody Anderson scored from the 1 with 18 seconds left to pull the Panthers within one. On a roll of the dice, Nathan Prissel found the end zone on a run to pull out the win.Long touchdown runs don't always lead to wins. Nathan Weltzin ran 81 yards from scrimmage for Cumberland; Brandon Schaffer did 85 for Clayton; Tanner Tryggestad had an 85-yard kickoff return for Amery and Jordan Reidt did an 83 return for Independence/Gilmanton. They all lost. One team that did win and the celebration continues is Alma Center Lincoln. The Hornets stung Alma 18-14 and it was the first 'W' since the 2006 season in a losing streak that reached more than 15 games. There's always a sad part to a win. Alma lost. And is winless. The unbeaten list remains at eight and they are Chippewa Falls, Bloomer, Baldwin-Woodville, Colby, Hayward, Plum City, St. Croix Falls and Shell Lake. One will fall from the ranks as Bloomer travels to Hayward and two others face still challenges: Plum City is at Elmwood and Chippewa Falls hosts Menomonie....
