damaged another and a shedAn electrical malfunction tentatively is being blamed for a fire Thursday afternoon that destroyed Chippewa Bi Products a company that makes alligator and dog food and Countryside Hides which processes deer hides said Alma Center Fire Chief Jeff GaedeEmergency officials received a call at 1:39 pm Thursday Gaede said The companies are housed at the same facility on Lea Brothers Road just east of Alma Center in Jackson CountyEmployees said they saw smoke in the eaves section on the northeast side of the building and shut off the power But the fire spread throughout the 100footlong building once it got into the rafters Gaede said FridayThe building about 30 to 40 feet wide was a combination of about 10 or 12 buildings that were added onto over the years under one roof he said The building had cement and wood walls and mostly tin roofing Two excavators used backhoes to separate metal from the burning material at the sceneThere were no injuries and no monetary damage estimate was available Insurance officials were at the scene Friday Gaede saidFire departments from Taylor Merrillan Humbird Hixton Fairchild Black River Falls and the state Department of Natural Resources assisted the Alma Center department at the scene About 100000 gallons of water were used to extinguish the blaze Officials left the scene about 7:40 pmIn Chippewa County a corn dryer caught fire early Friday at Romanowski Grain Services in StanleyFire Chief Ron Zais said the call came at 3:53 am and 17 firefighters responded They left the scene at 9 am but they had to return at 4:30 pm after the fire flared up he said It was a buildup of dirt and chaff corn husks that got caught in the burner and it overheated Zais said It just took off There's a whole lot of damageIf the corn dryer is a complete loss replacing it could cost 400000 Zais saidThe building is 50 feet tall and the cold weather presented a challenge for firefighters the chief saidOwner Larry Romanowski of Gilman couldn't be reached for commentZais said the building is about three years old and it's located about 1000 feet south of the Ace Ethanol plant on the west side of StanleyThe Fall Creek Area Fire Department was called to a fire late Friday afternoon at S7385 Suncrest Road off Hillview Drive in the town of LincolnFire Chief Bob DeWitz couldn't be reached for comment but Eau Claire County Sheriff's Department Sgt Carl Duncan said a wood stove is suspected of causing the fire in the 20by30foot shed Investigating the Chippewa Bi Products Fire
