doubles team a http://www.axtora.com/homesites/us/wisconsin/almon/content/c2fd1a7112fcb4fd086e5c199ae92510.html Erin Stenseth can't quite remember exactly how long she's known Gretchen BachmeierThey attended the same church years ago and they've been friends at least since their freshman year at Eau Claire NorthSuffice it to say that it's been awhileWatch the pair work together on a tennis court and it sure looks like itIt sure doesn't look like Stenseth is playing with an unfamiliar doubles partner It sure doesn't look like that new partner Bachmeier hadn't played a point of doubles before this seasonGretchen and I get along so well and we're playing really really well together this year said Stenseth a senior who twice has qualified for the WIAA Division 1 girls tennis individual state tournament in doubles I just like playing with herFor the first time in three seasons Stenseth won't be lining up alongside Aleisha Harper The Huskies pair advanced to the second round of the state tournament last fall and also qualified in 2006 But Harper a threetime state participant graduated in the spring and left Stenseth without a doubles teammateIt's always hard seeing your partner leave but you can't really look in the past said Stenseth who also is a standout in hockey and softball You've just got to look aheadThe road in front of her certainly looks a little bit different this season But now sharing a court with Bachmeier it still very well might lead Stenseth back to Madison for a third shot at stateI'm hoping so she said after cruising to a doubles victory with Bachmeier during the Eau Claire Memorial Invitational on Friday afternoon at Memorial High School That's always what you're hoping forMoving Bachmeier who played No 1 singles last season onto the same court as Stenseth this fall was done with just that in mindWe felt that our best opportunity to get back down to Madison would be to take Erin and then our best singles player and see if we couldn't make a doubles team out of them said Huskies coach Mark Turner who has led the team for 10plus seasonsFacing a stacked sectional on the singles side it was decided that Bachmeier would have a better chance of ending her senior season at the state tournament if she teamed with Stenseth at No 1 doublesErin is your ultimate team player said Turner whose team captains are Bachmeier Stenseth and Mallory DevineShe's the kind of person you want as a doubles player and as a partner you know she's never going to be down on you She's never going to be upset with you She's just going to keep going and keep fighting She's meshed really well with GretchenThe transition took a little adjusting but it more or less has been smooth sailing for the new team The duo won all four of its matches at the Memorial Invite this weekend all against teams it'll share a sectional with in the playoffs come OctoberA lot of her strengths are what my weaknesses are and my strengths are her weaknesses so we kind of really meshed well together said Bachmeier who competed in the 800meter run and the 1600 relay at the WIAA Division 1 track and field state meet in the spring It takes a little bit of time but every match we play together just keeps getting better and betterHowever Stenseth and Bachmeier's partnership will be put on hold once the teamoriented Big Rivers Conference schedule begins In an effort to make the math work in his team's favor Turner will have the two playing singles in BRC play and the conference tournamentIf I put them together I'm probably going to get one win Turner said If I keep them apart in singles there's a better chance of getting two winsDuring conference dual meets Bachmeier will go back to No 1 singles and Stenseth likely will slide in at No 3 singles In addition to working with her new partner before the BRC slate begins Stenseth also has had a chance to get used to playing singlesI think she's got very quick hands from her hockey and her softball catching Turner said She never flinches I'm surprised at how many balls she gets her racket on that other kids would have turned their back on and given up onMake no mistake though: When subsectionals arrive Stenseth and Bachmeier will carry the Huskies' banner and together will make a final run at the state tournamentThe two of them I just know that we're never going to be out of a match until the last ball bounces twice Turner said We'll never throw the towel inTurner wouldn't put it past Stenseth and Bachmeier to go into subsectionals as one of the top seeds and do some damage if they can make it to MadisonI'm sure there's an elite eight or 10 teams down there he said Then there's another 30 or 40 in the draw that the girls should be able to play with so we're thinking along those linesTeam
