Portage County crash has two fatalities Found: Minutes ago The Daily Tribune - A two-vehicle crash shortly after 2 p.m Sunday in Portage County resulted in two fatalities.Names of the deceased have not yet been released.
About 2:02 p.m. Sunday, the Portage County Sheriffs Department responded to a report of a motor vehicle crash with injuries on Highway 54 S., east of Highway BB in Buena Vista.
According to the press release regarding the preliminary investigation, a vehicle traveling westbound on Highway 54 S. was slowing to turn into a parking lot. The westbound van then turned into the path of an eastbound automobile.
The two female occupants in the eastbound vehicle were pronounced dead on the scene. Another female occupant in the eastbound vehicle wastransported with serious injuries to Saint Josephs Hospital by Spirit of Marshfield.
The two male occupants of the westbound van were wearing seatbelts and not injured in the crash.
Highway 54 was rerouted for approximately one hour.
The crash remains under investigation. Alcohol is not considered to be a contributing factor. The Wisconsin State Patrol Technical Accident Investigation Team was called in the reconstruct the crash.
Also responding to the scene and assisting the Portage County Sheriffs Department were the Wisconsin State Patrol, Plover Fire Department, Plover First Responders, Amherst Tech 1 ambulance service, Portage County ambulance services and Spirit of Marshfield helicopter....

Local Red Cross volunteers leave for Texas Found: 1 Month 11 Hours 47 Minutes ago Stevens Point Journal - The American Red Cross is getting ready for Hurricane Ike. For the fourth time in a month, the Red Cross is moving people and materials in anticipation of a hurricane landfall. More than 100 mobile feeding trucks are moving into Texas today. More than 300,000 shelf stable meals are already in Texas. More than 600 Red Cross workers are now being sent to Texas to join the 1,500 Texas disaster workers already there. Local Red Cross disaster volunteers James Koehl of Amherst Junction and Larry Sipiorski of Stevens Point left today for Fort Worth, Texas. This is the first national disaster operation for each of these men.
James Koehl will be assigned as a service associate in the sheltering operation as the Red Cross readies for Hurricane Ike. His assignment is for two weeks.
Larry Sipiorski will be assigned as a service associate in the Disaster Welfare Inquiry area. He, too, will be on assignment for two weeks.
Members of the local Red Cross Disaster Action Team (DAT) are volunteers specially trained by the local chapter in various aspects of disaster response such as: client casework, disaster assessment and mass care. Those interested in volunteering for the American Red Cross DAT program should contact the local American Red Cross office at 344-4052....
UWSP to host contemporary glass exhibit Found: Minutes ago Stevens Point Journal - University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point professors and local and regional artists will exhibit their glass artwork at the UWSP Carlsten Gallery beginning Monday.Opening with a public reception from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Monday, the Contemporary Glass Exhibition will run through Sunday, Oct. 19. The Carlsten Gallery, located on the second floor of the Noel Fine Arts Center on the UWSP campus, is open free to the public Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Thursdays 7 p.m. to 9 p.m., and Saturday and Sunday from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.
The glass artwork includes stained glass, lampworkings, cast and blown glass, slump and kiln formed glass and etched and painted glass by UWSP Art and Design Department Professors Kristin Thielking and Keven Brunett, UW-Marathon County Art Professor Tom Fleming, Madison artists Quincy Neri, Pamela Cramer, Martha Kauppi and Tracy Drier, Wausau artists Chandra Lynn, Amherst artist Sharon Fujimoto and Polonia artist Linda Moore.
The exhibit will also feature glasswork by UWSP students as well as work by three masters degree students from Illinois State University.
