Former police officer charged with theft
Found: 3 Days 23 Hours 25 Minutes ago
Fond du lac Reporter - A former Fond du Lac police officer has been charged with two counts of misdemeanor theft.Richard C. Woodruff, 45, of 467 Rockrose Drive, is accused of stealing and using two Wal-Mart gift cards from the Cops for Kids Foundation in late June. The investigation was handled by the Sheboygan Police Department. Washington County District Attorney Todd K. Martens made the charging decision. A $100 gift card verified as one reported missing from the Police Department was used at Wal-Mart, 377 N. Rolling Meadow Drive, to partially pay for a power washer and two other items on June 27. The total amount for the items was $280.54 and the remainder was paid for by check, with proof of identification being Woodruffs drivers license, according to the criminal complaint. A $50 gift card identified as one missing from the Police Department program that helps kids was used to purchase food on July 5 at a Sams Club in Wausau, the complaint states. Both surveillance videos show a man identified by a police department employee as Woodruff using the gift cards. Major Dennis Fortunato confirmed Woodruff resigned from the police department around the time the thefts were discovered. Woodruff turned over the two gift cards, according to the complaint. Six BP gift cards purchased by Cops for Kids on March 19 were also reported missing or had been cashed, according to the criminal complaint. Three gas cards valued at $200 were used in May and June and three others valued at $200 had not been cashed. The Cops For Kids Foundation was founded eight years ago by the police department to help children in Fond du Lac. The program allows officers to give the gift cards to families in need, according to the complaint....
