Van Hollen wants quick action on lawsuit Found: 3 Weeks 3 Days 20 Hours 20 Minutes ago Milwaukee Journal Sentinel - Madison- The state Department of Justice today asked a Dane County judge to quickly resolve its lawsuit over whether state and local officials should crosscheck ID information provided by new voters and voters who changed addresses on and after Jan. 1, 2006.In a motion to be heard by a Dane County judge on Sept. 19, lawyers for Attorney General J.B. Van Hollen said the need to comply with federal election laws by the Nov. 4 election justifies quick action on his lawsuit.
The state Government Accountability Board, which works with local clerks to conduct elections, decided to do the additional checking of voter ID data for voters who registered from Aug. 6 of this year on. Van Hollen sued over that decision, saying the 20002 federal Help America Vote Act requires those additional checks to be done on and after Jan. 1, 2006.

2-3 inches of rain possible over weekend Found: 3 Weeks 3 Days 20 Hours 21 Minutes ago Milwaukee Journal Sentinel - Expect a wet weekend in southeastern Wisconsin, where the National Weather Service is predicting as much as two to three inches of rain to fall through Saturday afternoon.Rain is expected to develop over the area tonight and may diminish tomorrow evening, according to Marc Kavinsky, meteorologist for the Weather Service at Sullivan.
A weak frontal boundary is slipping through the area right now and is expected to become stationary across northern Illinois and southern Wisconsin later today, he said. A new weather system will strengthen as it moves along the boundary later tonight and tomorrow and "bring us this wet weather," Kavinsky said. The Milwaukee metro area is about an inch above normal for rainfall this month after 2.01 inches fell on Sept. 3 and 4, according to Kavinsky.
The Weather Service is predicting a slight chance of rain on Sunday, depending on what happens with the remains of Hurricane Ike as that weather system moves into the upper Midwest, Kavinsky said.
"It could have a factor and return a period of heavy rain Sunday into Monday," Kavinsky said. "We're still having questions on its track and strength."...

Council rejects Barrett's fee hikes Found: 3 Weeks 3 Days 20 Hours 22 Minutes ago Milwaukee Journal Sentinel - Milwaukee aldermen today approved a fee increase for this year to help pay for a nearly $5 million pile of snow-related bills, but balked - for now - at Mayor Tom Barrett's requested fee increases for the 2009 budget. That means Barrett's planned $8.6 million patch for next year's budget is not in place, which he says will mean the financial package presents to the council later this month will include closures of libraries and firehouses, as well as more layoffs and deeper cuts than if the fees were OK'd.
Thecouncil voted 12-3 to increase the snow and ice removal fee for this year, raising it about $7.50 for the average homeowner. That is expected to bring in about $1.6 million, which will go toward covering the shortfall tied to the heavy snowfall early this year.
To avoid borrowing money, the rest would be covered with federal grants, belt-tightening measures and the city's contingency fund.
With an even bleaker budget picture for 2009, Barrett has proposed increases in the city's snow fee and garbage fee, as well as its sewer fee and storm water charge. The main increases are in the snow fee, which would go up about $8 for a typical household, and the garbage fee which would increase $37.
The council rejected both, but they will soon be back and most agree will be approved at some level.
Barrett will have to build his 2009 budget without the $8.6 million the fee increases would generate. He likely will present two versions of the budget: one with the fees hikes intact; another without them.
In both cases, he has said, there will be cuts and a property tax increase.
The cuts simply will be much more severe without the fee increases, since the city faces a cap on how much it can increase property taxes and has limited options for generating revenue elsewhere.
