Found: 5 Days 21 Hours 26 Minutes ago
Wisconsin State Journal - When freshmen Jamie Russell and Ashley Thomas hit the floor tonight in the University of Wisconsin women's basketball team's opener at South Dakota State, they will take a pugnacious approach to the game. For Russell, a 5-foot-7 guard from Rock Hills, Ill., the attitude comes naturally. Her dad, Tracy, is a former pro boxer who runs a gym and helped train his daughter in the sport before basketball became her passion. "I like to go hard and ... ...

The Capital Times - NEW HAVEN, Conn. -- A judge cleared the way Wednesday for gay marriage in Connecticut, a victory for advocates stung by California's referendum that banned same-sex unions in that state. Some couples planned to celebrate by immediately marching to New Haven City Hall to get marriage licenses. At least one ceremony was scheduled Wednesday morning on the New Haven green. Some of the eight couples who successfully challenged a state law prohibiting gay marriages last month wept ... ...

Show of appreciationProgram gives customized van to veteran
Found: 1 Week 4 Days 15 Hours 18 Minutes ago
Leader-Telegram - Eighteen months ago, an improvised explosive device severely injured Eau Claire native Shane Nault, a U.S. Army specialist serving his country in Iraq.Nault's family was told he would not survive the traumatic brain injury he suffered on May 8, 2007. When he survived, they were told he would have severe mental disabilities. Then, they were told he'd be bedridden.Despite severe injuries resulting from shrapnel and a stroke, Nault, who turns 22 later this month, is none of those things. He sometimes laughs and says a few words, and he can walk some with assistance."I'm so surprised how far he's come," said his mother, Lori Nault, "But that just shows you that the power of prayer can do a lot."Shane Nault returned to his parents' town of Brunswick home April 19 - 11 months and 11 days from the day he was injured in Baghdad. His family received news that he had been promoted to sergeant in late August. He was medically retired from the Army in September, and he and his family today - on Veterans Day - are scheduled to be presented with a customized van provided by Operation Support Our Troops' Wheels for Warriors program."It's just so much work to get him in and out of the truck," Lori Nault said in a telephone interview last week. "This is just a wonderful thing."Shane Nault is the seventh wounded veteran of the current conflicts in Afghanistan and Iraq - and the second in Wisconsin - to receive a van through the program, said Mary Kay Salomone, founder of the nonprofit Operation Support Our Troops."I'm looking forward to meeting the Nault family," Salomone said Friday from her home in Rhode Island. "I want to thank Shane and his family for their service and sacrifice."Salomone is no stranger to military service. Her father, Silvio Gasperini, her husband John, her brother Richard, and her son Stephen are graduates of the U.S. Military Academy in West Point, N.Y., and all, along with her son John, served in the military."I have two sons who served, and I am truly blessed that they both came home," she said. "I feel so blessed that something as little and insignificant as transportation will make a difference (for the Nault family)."The vans typically cost $45,000 to $60,000, Salomone said. The Florida-based Ocean Reef Foundation partnered with Operation Support Our Troops to cover the cost."When (members of the military) are wounded, they often lose their dignity, their freedom and their independence," she said. "We're hoping to give some of that back by giving them their own wheels. They might not be able to drive, but that's OK."The customized 2008 Chevrolet Uplander - purchased through Markquart Chevrolet and converted through AandJ Mobility - was fitted for Nault and includes a ramp for his wheelchair, double DVD player and GPS system."The bottom line is Shane is a true American hero without exception," said Neal Bennett, a mobility consultant with AandJ Mobility in Eau Claire. "We're glad to be involved in this, and I think (the van) is going to make it a whole lot easier on his family."Following in his father Mike's footsteps, Shane Nault entered the Army in 2005 after graduating from Memorial High School. He went through basic and advanced individual training at Fort Knox, Ky. He graduated in December of that year and was stationed with the 2nd Battalion, 12th Cavalry Regiment at Fort Bliss, Texas.Nault was deployed to Iraq in November 2006. In ensuing months, Nault encountered three IEDs, which damaged his hearing. He was seriously injured when a fourth IED exploded on May 8, 2007, while he and his unit were on patrol.Nault's life changed significantly that day. Shrapnel from the IED entered his head at his left temple, went through his brain's frontal lobe and exited just above the right temple.Initially flown to Germany, Nault suffered a stroke on the flight. Because of massive brain swelling, surgeons removed the front and sides of his skull. He was then transferred to the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, Md., where doctors found that almost all the bones in his face were broken.Nault had to be rushed into surgery after doctors discovered bleeding on the brain. Later that day, a clot in his cerebral artery was detected.Despite his severe injuries, Nault fought to recover - with his dad continually at his side and an unexpected visit from President George W. Bush, who was visiting wounded U.S. troops. He was transferred to the Minneapolis VA on June 21 and has undergone hours of occupational, physical and speech therapy. In January, Nault and his family returned to the National Naval Medical Center for surgery to replace the parts of his skull removed earlier by doctors with titanium. They returned to the Minneapolis VA on Feb. 16 to continue his care.Since coming home, Nault's family has continued to care for him, converting their garage into a therapy room."Shane has done remarkably well," Lori Nault said. "We're so proud of him."Others should be too, Salomone said....
