NFL Beat: Young example of fragile egos Found: 2 Months 3 Weeks 18 Hours 20 Minutes ago Milwaukee Journal Sentinel - With Vince Young back safely with the Tennessee Titans after several tense hours on Monday, the National Football League will likely treat the episode like a speed bump and keep on going. But maybe it shouldn’t. Maybe it should......
In her footstepsPrep volleyball preview: First-year Macks coach ... Found: 2 Months 4 Weeks 2 Days 5 Hours 46 Minutes ago Leader-Telegram - CHIPPEWA FALLS - Kat Roesler doesn't need any reminders.Yet there they are all the same, proudly on display in and around the gymnasium she walks into almost every day as the first-year volleyball coach at Chippewa Falls McDonell. There's the large, wooden plaque hung on one of the gym's outer walls. It's set up to face the open area just inside the high school's front doors, a tribute to the program's first coach - one of Wisconsin's all-time most successful. Not far from it, on that same wall, rests another plaque. This one, similar to the first but smaller, lists the winners of the Macks' annual volleyball invitational named after that coach.Inside the gym's walls, that coach's initials are painted on the floor. Inside the volleyball coaches' office, some of that coach's belongings still sit.Abundant and elaborate as those history lessons may be, Roesler doesn't need any help remembering her mother.By accepting the Macks coaching job and taking over for Denise Boos, Roesler stepped into the position that for nearly three decades was filled by her mother, Debbie, until her unexpected death in the spring of 2003."It's just a constant reminder," Kat Roesler said as her team wrapped up practice Tuesday afternoon at the high school. "Being in the gym - I associate the gym with her. That's where I always saw her, so that has a little more emotion attached to it."Debbie Roesler, a longtime teacher in the Chippewa Area Catholic Schools system, coached the Macks volleyball team for its first 27 seasons. She ultimately won more than 500 matches before suffering a sudden brain aneurysm after school March 21, 2003. She died one day later at the age of 48.Kat Roesler was a senior at McDonell that year. Just that fall, she had finished up her senior season of volleyball. Her mother, of course, was her coach. Now, after graduating with a degree in early childhood education from UW-Stout in March, Kat Roesler is teaching 4-year-old kindergarten at St. Charles, where Debbie used to teach physical education. After school ends for the day, Kat Roesler embraces the memory of her mother and keeps it alive through her involvement with a volleyball program Debbie Roesler built from the ground up."It's surreal, and I don't let myself think about it a lot because it's so different to be able to have a job that your mom had," Kat Roesler said."It's a whole different atmosphere that I didn't think I'd ever be in."Debbie Roesler, a 1976 graduate of UW-Superior and 2003 inductee into the university's Hall of Fame, still ranks as one of the all-time winningest prep volleyball coaches in Wisconsin's history. With her at the wheel, the Macks won 14 conference titles and the 1999 WISAA state tournament. She also was an assistant coach for the track and field team, which won state titles in 1984, '98, '99 and 2000. After her death, she became an honorary member of McDonell's 2004 graduating class."It's kind of weird," said Kat Roesler, relaxing in the volleyball coaches' office. "Some of her stuff is still up in here, and I'm more scared to take it down. It's fun, but it's big shoes to fill. And so there's a lot of pressure because I know it's a successful program. It's a lot of pressure put in my hands right away. But I'm excited. It's fun so far."Kat Roesler grew up on the volleyball court with Debbie. Most of what the new Macks coach learned about the game she's now teaching, then, was passed down directly from her mother."She was very intense, and I get my intensity from her," said Kat Roesler, who played volleyball and was on the track and field team at UW-Stout. "I've been told a lot that I coach just like her because, I mean, I talk all the time. I'm moving all the time."But there's so many things just attitude-wise. She was big on attitude and playing as a team. ... That's all we'd know because that's what I learned when I was little, just watching her coach. Those kind of roles and that kind of advice I feel like I know just because I've been around it forever."Seeing his daughter take over the position his wife excelled in for so long made an impact for Steve Roesler, who is Kat's father and an assistant volleyball coach."It's kind of special to have her back here again and have that going on," said Steve Roesler, who was McDonell's athletic director."Both of us don't make any public displays of that or talk about it with the kids or anything, but it's definitely something different and special." A week from Saturday, Kat Roesler will lead her Macks into the Debbie Roesler Volleyball Invitational. An assistant coach with the Macks last season, she found herself overcome with emotion - even more than she expected - during the annual tournament dedicated to her mother. The feelings probably won't be much different this year."There's been times where I've already cried," she said. "I'm an emotional person anyway, but coming through that stuff and then just different situations where I could remember her - remember her standing or different things she would say or different drills - it's a little more emotional, so it makes it a little tougher. But it's special. It's a different connection."On the court with this season's team, the Macks' new coach has been a shot of energy for one of the contenders in a revamped and highly competitive Western Cloverbelt Conference."It's exciting to have Kat as a coach," Macks senior libero Mollie Meagher said. "She's a great coach, and it's so much fun. I look forward to every day."Her college playing days not very far in her rearview mirror, Kat Roesler doesn't shy away from being actively involved in her team's practices, either."She's extremely energetic," Macks senior right-side hitter Sam Schemenauer said. "She gets in and she plays with us. She uses her talent to help us, so that's really nice."Debbie Roesler's contribution to the Macks volleyball program is as well-remembered as it is well-documented, to be sure. Now the program is in her daughter's hands. Kat Roesler might be writing her own history, but she's doing so armed with wisdom and passion instilled by her mother. As the sixth anniversary of Debbie Roesler's death approaches, it appears her contribution isn't complete just yet."I feel like my biggest connection with my mom - and I'm a momma's girl for sure - I think my biggest connection has always been volleyball," Kat Roesler said. "We both are in love with volleyball. It's always been that way. I feel like part of it I'm doing for her. It just is living out her legacy a little bit more in a different way."Area preview capsulesBig RiversEau Claire Memorial- Coach: Kris Chapman, ninth season.- Roster: SENIORS - Gennie Galfano, OH; Cali Schultz, MH; Lexi Handrick, OH; Kate Gutkowski, BRS; Nicole Valk, BRS.
