Rails on trackAltoona 64, Stanley-Boyd 43: Railroaders open with win
Found: 1 Day 21 Hours 31 Minutes ago
Leader-Telegram - ALTOONA - Coach Andy Riechers wasn't quite sure what to expect in Tuesday's boys basketball season opener. He was relying on three sophomores to play big minutes and against a conference newcomer he knew relatively little about. As it turned out, Riechers didn't need to worry. Even though the Railroaders showed some early jitters, they turned in a strong season debut and gave Stanley-Boyd a rude welcome to the Western Cloverbelt with a 64-43 home victory.Keying Altoona's win was a big second quarter and a balanced offense led by Tyler Schroyer's 21 points."We were concerned coming in because we hadn't played them in a number of years," Riechers said. "So we really didn't know what was coming back. We hadn't had a chance to watch them play at all. I think the coach was more nervous than anybody going into this. The kids really responded."After a rather impatient and nervous first quarter, that response came in the second quarter. The Rails (1-0, 1-0 Western Cloverbelt) trailed 10-9 heading into the second but took control with a 28-point quarter. After forcing outside shots in the first quarter, Altoona became more patient in the second, working the ball inside either by touching the post or driving to the basket. The result was a 12-for-19 shooting effort with no turnovers.Schroyer scored 12 of his 21 in the quarter, which the Rails began with a 10-0 run."Right away our outside shot wasn't falling," said senior forward Alex Rau, who scored 13 and grabbed six rebounds. "Coach pulled us out and said we've got to start working inside and start getting layups. We started penetrating more. Just by doing that, it opened up the outside shot and helped us get in rhythm."Stanley-Boyd (0-1, 0-1) made a brief surge after switching to a 1-3-1 zone in the third quarter but never seriously challenged Altoona in the second half. Each time the Orioles made a run, the balanced Rails had a answer. Nine different players scored, and the Rails bench outscored its counterpart 15-3."The first game was a lot of learning," Schroyer said. "The 1-3-1 kind of caught us off guard at first. Then we kind of regrouped. The weak side was there quite a bit."Stanley-Boyd is one of two newcomers - Thorp is the other - to the Western Cloverbelt this season. The Orioles still are in the process of replacing seven seniors from last season's sectional qualifying team. Tuesday they were led by Jason Reit's 18 points and Ryan Ericksen's seven rebounds."Any time we had any turnovers, they capitalized and put points on the board," Orioles coach Tom Hause said. "They've got a solid team. They hit their open shots and played good defense."Altoona's sophomore class played a big part in the win. Caleb Burch started at point guard and scored eight points - almost meeting Riechers' goal of three double-figure scorers.Bo Manor also started the game and drew the defensive assignment on Orioles standout forward Paul Reit. Riechers opted to use the lanky Manor to try to negate some of the 6-foot-4 Reit's quickness and allow the 6-foot-6 Rau to clean up in the middle. That plan worked to perfection as Rau came up with several blocked shots and Manor - with help from backup Casey Brown - held Reit to nine points on 3-for-17 shooting.Another sophomore, Trevor Wittwer, was the first player off the bench. He scored five points."I think they did very well," Rau said. "The first quarter, everyone was a little nervous. They really loosened up and started playing some good ball. They're really going to help us out this year."altoona 64, stanley-boyd 43Stanley-Boyd - Neil Hebert 5, Brett Sorenson 4, Jason Reit 18, Paul Reit 9, Ryan Ericksen 4, Alec Fitzsimmons 2, Rick Peggar 1.
