Leader-Telegram - HATFIELD - Bruce McBain swept leaves off the porch of the Thunderbird Lodge, occasionally glancing toward a nearby house where a Jackson County deputy and others were loading the Sidie family's belongings into trucks. The signs outside Hatfield advertising a summer population of 5,000 and a winter population of 50 have become a local joke; increasingly, visitors have been coming to the small Lake Arbutus community for deer hunting, ice fishing, ATV and snowmobile riding, skiing and hiking. But during the week when the community usually prepares for an influx of deer hunters, it is instead dealing with the shock and sadness of a woman's death, her ex-husband's arrest for murder and placement of the couple's 2-year-old twin boys into protective custody."It's a tragedy for everybody involved," McBain said. The Jackson County Sheriff's Department reported Monday that Douglas A. Sidie, 39, confessed to killing his ex-wife, Alisha M. Sidie, 27, on Nov. 7 outside their home. Douglas Sidie is being held in jail without bond. He is expected to be formally charged this week with first-degree intentional homicide. According to a probable-cause statement written by the Sheriff's Department, Douglas Sidie told officials he argued with Alisha Sidie in their home's garage on the evening of Nov. 7. At one point she left the garage, and Douglas Sidie grabbed a handgun and concealed it in his waistband. He then confronted his ex-wife and shot her once in the head.Douglas Sidie then loaded the body into his pickup, drove to the neighboring town of Komensky and dragged the body into a wooded area.Authorities and volunteers had searched for Alisha Sidie since her ex-husband reported her missing on Nov. 8. On Saturday law enforcement officials aided by a search dog recovered Alisha Sidie's body, and authorities arrested Douglas Sidie at 6:30 p.m.In the small community of Hatfield, McBain said crime is virtually nonexistent and the only incident he's seen in five years is the theft of a bicycle outside his lodge."You just can't believe it can happen to the next-door neighbor," McBain said. The lodge owner said he'd chat with the Sidies when he saw them. Douglas Sidie was an avid angler and hunter, while Alisha Sidie spent time pushing a stroller with the twin boys in it, McBain said.Alisha Sidie had worked at Black River Chiropractic Clinic for about a year as a chiropractic assistant. Her duties included taking vital signs, doing paperwork and helping with physical therapy plans."She was really good with patients," chiropractor Chanelle Holliday said.Another chiropractor at the small practice, Todd Volk, said Alisha Sidie always had a smile on her face, was loved by patients and worked hard. She worked full time during the summer but scaled back her hours when she began taking nursing classes this fall at Chippewa Valley Technical College."That's what her ultimate goal was - to be a nurse," Volk said.In addition to school and working at the chiropractic practice, Alisha Sidie also tended bar at Sunset Tavern east of Hatfield. The Sidies filed jointly for divorce in May 2007. A divorce was granted in September 2007, but they still lived in the same home with their children.Even though they were divorced, McBain said, they appeared to a have a good relationship and he never saw them fight. However, court records show that deputies in 2005 responded to a domestic abuse call at the home.A criminal complaint filed in that case states Douglas Sidie had been drinking on the evening of June 4, 2005, and his then-fiancee, Alisha, picked him up from a campsite at Wazee Lake. After they arrived at their home, Douglas Sidie asked for the keys to the truck and Alisha Sidie threw them into the yard to stop him from driving. He pushed her out of the truck, she got up, he pushed her to the ground and kicked her in the side of her head. After they struggled, Alisha Sidie ran to a phone and called police. After the charge of domestic battery had been pleaded down to disorderly conduct on Jan. 16, 2006, Douglas Sidie paid a $248 fine.A memorial service for Alisha Sidie will be at 6 p.m. Thursday at Buswell Funeral Home in Black River Falls.Dowd can be reached at 833-9204, 800-236-7077 or andrew.dowd@ecpc.com....

A tragic discoveryBody of woman found; Ex-husband in custody
Found: 2 Weeks 3 Days 23 Hours 24 Minutes ago
Leader-Telegram - BLACK RIVER FALLS - Jackson County Chief Deputy Mark Moan knew immediately that his 4-year-old bloodhound, Clyde, had locked onto Alisha Sidie's trail late Saturday night."When I was given the area, it was almost a nine-day-old scent," Moan said. "He was given a scent article, and he took me almost directly to the body."Moan gave the dog Sidie's hairbrush and a shoe to smell, and Clyde immediately zeroed in on the scent. They walked together for about a mile until Clyde found the body."It's amazing, but that's what he does," Moan said.Sidie, 27, was found dead Saturday night in a wooded area a few miles from her home in the town of Komensky. She was last seen alive Nov. 7. Her ex-husband, Doug Sidie, reported her missing the following day.Ex-husband to be chargedEarlier Saturday, Doug Sidie was arrested after a key witness gave the Jackson County Sheriff's Department new information, said Sheriff Duane Waldera. Doug Sidie then gave officers information about where to look for Alisha Sidie's body. Search teams had not previously looked in that area, Waldera said. At a press conference Sunday afternoon in Black River Falls, Jackson County District Attorney Gerald Fox announced he would seek charges of first-degree intentional homicide, hiding a corpse and obstructing an officer. Doug Sidie is being held on probable cause in Alisha Sidie's death. Fox said he expects it will be several days before a criminal complaint is filed."I can't tell you specifically when he will appear in court next," Fox said. "I'm not going to rush the Sheriff's Department (in getting reports to me). The last thing we want to do is rush the last 10 percent of the case and get something wrong."Fox said he will ask the court to not allow Sidie to be given a bond for release."Our hearts go out to the families involved," Fox said.Alisha Sidie's body has been taken to Madison for an autopsy. Waldera declined to say how she died, or if the body was buried. However, Waldera acknowledged Doug Sidie had "attempted to conceal the body."The couple have two 2-year-old twin boys. They have been placed in protective custody, and Waldera said he wouldn't elaborate on that."This is a tragic case where we have several victims," Waldera said.Tip leads to findOfficers have been investigating several leads since Doug Sidie reported his ex-wife missing Nov. 8, with law enforcement from across the region and volunteers combing the area around the couple's home looking for clues.Waldera said Doug Sidie was not initially a suspect in the case. However, on Saturday morning a witness gave the Sheriff's Department new information, Waldera said, but he wouldn't elaborate on what that evidence was."A volunteer search found one of our key pieces of evidence," Waldera said.Doug Sidie was then arrested, and he reportedly told officers where to look for the body."Everything happened (Saturday)," Waldera said. "It came together quickly. It took us all day, from start to finish."Doug Sidie has not yet given a reason for why he allegedly killed his ex-wife, Waldera said."I can't actually say if he's cooperating," Waldera said. The Sheriff's Department had been called to the Sidie residence in the past, Waldera said. The couple were divorced but were still living together, he said. Waldera added that he believes Doug Sidie acted alone, and that the Sheriff's Department does not believe anyone else was involved.Dog overcomes obstaclesMoan said during the investigation, nine cadaver-tracking dogs and three bloodhounds were used. However, on Saturday it was just Moan and Clyde working together. Jackson County has two K-9 units - a German shepherd used primarily in drug cases, and Clyde, who is used typically in searches and rescues. Moan said Clyde has been used in many searches in the region, especially on some missing person cases in La Crosse.Moan said Clyde has seen a few doctors recently - the dog has cancer, but it is in remission. His belly has been shaved in spots after some treatment."He is in good health and in good spirits," Moan said. "He's in full remission and we hope he stays that way a long time. Because he sure knows his job."Vetter can be reached at 723-0303 or chris.vetter@ecpc.com....
