Veteran Cards on a missionGirls Prep Hockey Preview: Veteran Cards on ... Found: 1 Day 3 Hours 44 Minutes ago Leader-Telegram - CHIPPEWA FALLS - There isn't much the Chippewa Falls girls hockey team could face this season that is going to catch it off guard. Fact is, there just isn't a whole lot this Cardinals team hasn't seen in the past two seasons. From tough state tournament losses to unlikely come-from-behind victories, Chippewa Falls pretty much has seen and dealt with the entire gamut of emotions and challenges that come along with a taxing hockey campaign. And that experience just might be its ticket to success this season. "They've seen it all," coach Andy Skelton said. "It's been a great ride for a lot of these kids and they've experienced a lot of things that kids don't get a chance to. I know they don't take it for granted and I know they want to get back to state and have success again."Yet for all the success Chippewa Falls has enjoyed the past two seasons, the one thing it has been missing is experience. When the Cards made their surprising run to the state title game two years ago, it was a team that counted almost entirely on freshmen and sophomores. Among its numbers, Chippewa Falls counted only three upperclassmen and just one a senior. It was a similar story last year when a sophomore- and junior-dominated team carried the team to the state tournament for the second straight year. This year, however, the core group of those two teams is all grown up. The Cardinals have more seniors on their roster this year (five) than they've lost to graduation in two previous campaigns (three). Add in a junior class that goes seven deep and a roster of 22 players that is the largest in program history, and Chippewa Falls may have an even more dangerous team than in years past."Experience helps us a lot," senior goaltender Kiara McChesney said. "We had some good freshmen last year and I think they'll be a lot better this year after a year in high school."Of course, it doesn't hurt when those youngsters are taking their cues from a trio of all-state performers in two-time selection Mikayla Hogan, defenseman Megan White and McChesney.Hogan has done nothing but score since joining the Cardinals her sophomore year. The senior has amassed a staggering 102 goals and 44 assists the past two seasons, while McChesney turned an impressive 1.70 goals-against average as a sophomore into a miniscule 1.13 average last season."A lot of players really worked hard over the offseason and you can really tell," said White, a second-team all-state pick. "Getting back to state is definitely the goal, and we're going to have to work hard to get back there. "Especially after the way we played last year, we have to pick up the pace this year. It definitely makes you want to work harder."While a third trip to the state tournament in the program's third year of existence is the goal, the road certainly will be tougher this season. Sectional realignment by the WIAA has left the Cardinals in what amounts to a who's who of girls hockey programs in the state. Gone are conference foes Hudson, Menomonie and St. Croix Valley - a team the Cardinals beat in the sectional final the past two years. In their place are a group of six new teams that include 2008 state champion Central Wisconsin Storm and state tournament qualifier Northland Pines. Add in the Cardinals and Big Rivers rival ECA Stars - a team Chippewa Falls beat, 4-1, in its season opener Tuesday - and you've got a sectional that contains four of the state's top 10 teams from a year ago and three state tourney qualifiers. "That's the way it should be. It's not supposed to be easy. Getting there is a tough road and I know they don't take it for granted and they know how difficult it is and it's not going to be any easier this year," Skelton said. "They are hungrier now more than ever. They know they are right there and if they really want it they've got to continue to work hard."...
