Back at itHelminen leading at Wisconsin State Open
Found: 3 Months 2 Weeks 1 Day 16 Hours 23 Minutes ago
Leader-Telegram - ALTOONA - When Ryan Helminen played in the Wisconsin State Open at the Eau Claire Golf and Country Club in 1994, he shot 15 over par, missed the cut and was pretty happy about it."I was a hockey player then and was thrilled with my score," he said. He's come a long way. Tuesday he shot a bogey-free 66, the best round of the tournament, to take a two-shot lead over two players going into today's 36-hole finale. In 1994 Helminen was playing junior hockey and being recruited by UW-Madison. He switched sports and ended up playing for the Badgers' golf team from 1996 to 1999.Fourteen years later he has fine-tuned his former hockey-influenced swing and is playing some of the best golf of his life. He was state Professional Golfers Association pro of the year in 2007.After shooting an even-par 71 on Monday, he shot a 5-under-par 66 that could have been much better. He lipped out for birdie on his final hole, No. 9, and missed another three putts inside 7 feet, he said.He did, however, nail putts from 30 and 40 feet with his long-shafted putter while shooting 33-33."I was very patient, and I was very fortunate to not make many mistakes," said Helminen, who lives in his hometown of Appleton and commutes to Stevens Point, where he is assistant pro at SentryWorld.Although he's ahead of first-round leader Eddie Terasa of Waukesha and amateur Nick Krattiger of Monroe by two shots, he knows that the tournament is only half over. Another 11 players are within six shots."It's a marathon. I realize it's a long day (today). If I continue to hit the ball the way I am, I feel good about my chances," said Helminen, whose previous best State Open finish was second in 2006.Helminen's chances for the tile took shape while they disappeared for local favorite Brady Keegan. After shooting 68 on Monday, one shot off the lead, the country club member fell to 85 on Tuesday and missed the cut as a gallery of about 25 followed him.He shot 44 on his front nine, including a triple bogey, then ran into disaster on No. 1 (his 10th hole) with a 10 on the par 4. He hit two balls into Otter Creek near the tee after hitting trees."I hit some bad shots and didn't capitalize on the good ones," said Keegan, a UW-Madison golf recruit who begins tryouts Aug. 26. "It's a downer. It was just a weird round."Several players from the region remain in contention. Andrew Rauscher of River Falls is five shots back after a 69. Eric Stabenow, a country club assistant pro, and Neil Johnson of River Falls are both seven behind.Other regional players who made the cut included Travis Meyer of River Falls, country club member Tim Murphy and Brady Mork of Menomonie.Terasa, the 1985 and 1995 State Open champion, followed his opening-round 67 with a 72. He started with three bogeys but rebounded with four birdies on his back nine."Today I fought all day long. I had no control over the golf ball. I turned it around in the middle of the round and got a little momentum going," said Terasa, golf pro at North Hills Country Club and a member of the state golf hall of fame. "I've got to go to the range and figure something out."Krattiger, 21, had one of the final tee times Tuesday. After a well-judged chip from below the green, he tapped in for birdie on the par 5 18th hole for a 68.The key to his round was the front nine, he said, when he one-putted the first four holes for pars."I hit the ball real solid. There were some tough pins," said Krattiger, a Monroe native and former UW-Green Bay player.Krattiger attends the San Diego Golf Academy to prepare him for a career as a PGA teaching pro, although he still hopes to play professionally.Poling can be reached at 830-5832, 800-236-7077 or jerry.poling@ecpc.com.wisconsin state openAt Eau Claire Golf and Country ClubAltoonaPar 71After Tuesday's Second Round137 - Ryan Helminen, Appleton (71-66).139 - Eddie Terasa, Waukesha (67-72); Nick Krattiger, Monroe (71-68).140 - Garett Jones, Rewey (71-69).141 - Charlie Delsman, Colgate (68-73).142 - Mike Johnston, Milwaukee (75-67); David Roesch, Germantown (68-74); Andrew Rauscher, River Falls (73-69); Jeff Bisbee, Green Bay (73-69); Patrick Stolpe, Scottsdale, Ariz. Keegan in the mixKeegan in mix at State Open
Found: 3 Months 2 Weeks 2 Days 8 Hours 19 Minutes ago
Leader-Telegram - ALTOONA - The Wisconsin State Open golf tournament, which began Monday and runs through Wednesday at Eau Claire Golf and Country Club, has 93 professionals going shot for shot and competing for the $8,000 first-place prize. Brady Keegan is not one of them. But you wouldn't be able to tell after the former Eau Claire Memorial star shot a 3-under 68 on Monday morning to place himself just one shot off the pace through the first 18 holes of a tournament making its return to the Eau Claire area after a 14-year absence.Keegan, who is an amateur and therefore is competing for gift certificates of up to $750, will enter his second round this afternoon just one shot behind Waukesha's Eddie Terasa on the leaderboard."My ball-striking was a lot better today and I think that helped my score a lot," Keegan said. "I made a nice putt on 10 and three great shots to set up tap-in birdies."My goal was to shoot around even, and the last thing I wanted to do was shoot myself out of the tournament on the first day, so I'm definitely happy with a 3 under."Keegan wasn't the only amateur to make a splash during the first round of the three-day tournament as two others - Austin Ehlenfeldt of Beaver Dam and Andrew Steinhofer of Madison - joined him in red numbers. Ehlenfeldt also shot 3 under par, while Steinhofer was 1 under.Keegan is currently tied for second with four other golfers: Jason Hill of Greenville, Ehlenfeldt, Charlie Delsman of Colgate and David Roesch of Germantown. The morning groups were blessed with some picture-perfect weather as a light breeze was able to keep the course relatively comfortable."I think the breeze has definitely helped," tournament director Chris Hoel said. "It's kept the humidity down so it's been a pretty good day for scoring."Hoel, who is a representative of the Wisconsin Professional Golf Association, said that while the heat did pick up a bit in the afternoon, none of the players were complaining."The greens were perfect," said professional Rich Tock, who teed off in the afternoon Monday and finished with an even-par 71, "The golf course is in really good condition. It's great that the membership here allows us to come up here and take their club for three days."Tock has played the Eau Claire Golf and Country Club course before, competing in a senior open event two years ago as well as the State Open, which was won by Menomonie native Ben Walter, who now lives in Eagan, Minn., in 1994.Walter returned for this year's event and finished with a 75 in Monday's opening round. If course experience was a factor with regards to posting low scores Monday, that could be an understandable explanation for Keegan's success. He is a member at the Eau Claire Golf and Country Club and said he did draw some confidence from his experience on the course."I think I know where not to hit the ball and what greens play well," said Keegan, who had six birdies and three bogeys. "But you still have to go out and hit the shots."The course was kind of difficult today. The pins were definitely set up for a tournament but I thought it played pretty fairly for everyone."So how does Keegan plan on carrying his success over to today's competition in which he will tee off at 12:09 p.m.?"I just want to go out and not make stupid mistakes," he said. "I don't want to have any unforced bogeys."If he can make good on his wish and stay within shouting distance of the top of the leaderboard, things could be looking very bright going into Wednesday's final two rounds of play.WISCONSIN STATE OPENAt Eau Claire Golf and Country ClubAltoonaPar 71After Monday's First Round67 - Eddie Terasa, Waukesha.68 - Brady Keegan, Eau Claire; Jason Hill, Greenville; Charlie Delsman, Colgate; Austin Ehlenfeldt, Beaver Dam; David Roesch, Germantown.70 - Andrew Steinhofer, Madison; Brian Pionkowski, Madison; Brody Moreland, Lake Nebagamon.71 - Eric Stabenow, Eau Claire; Jason Samuelian, Racine; Ryan Helminen, Appleton; Patrick Stolpe, Scottsdale, Ariz.; Michael Masik, Racine; Andy Podolak, Milwaukee; Keegan Drugan, Holmen; Nick Krattiger, Monroe; Pat Boyle, South Milwaukee; Garrett Jones, Rewey; Richard Tock, Mequon; Tim Murphy, Eau Claire.72 - Ted Gray, Oshkosh; Jack Schultz, Whitefish Bay; Miles McConnell, Fitchburg; Mark Schneider, Holmen; Kevin Cahill, Waukesha; Mike Greer, Eau Claire.73 - Andrew DeKeuster, Franksville; David Merkow, Hartland; Jeff Bisbee, Green Bay; Neil Johnson, River Falls; Ryan Prickette, Neenah; Nickolas Kwaterski, Sister Bay; Mason Milner, Onalaska; Brad Peck, Verona; Adam Steinhofer, Madison; Max Hosking, Madison; Paul LoCicero, Menomonee Falls; Rick Witt, Madison; Andrew Rauscher, River Falls.74 - Larry Tiziani, Madison; Michael Belich, West Allis; Kurt Mantyla, Wales; Steve Johnson, Mequon; Joe Leonard, Monona; Matthew Reel, Fort Atkinson; Taylor Johnson, Oconomowoc; Nicholas Byom, Pewaukee; John Statz, Beaver Dam; Mario Tiziani, Shorewood, Minn.; Michael Harris, Shorewood; Tommy Welton, Port Washington; Clark Eichstedt, Kewaskum; Sam VanGalder, Janesville; Jon Jacobs, Cedarburg.75 - Mark Voeller, Waukesha; Ben Walter, Eagan, Minn.; Bob Gregorski, Menasha; Pat Gorman, Waunakee; John Schneider, Racine; Braden Mork, Menomonie; Nicholas Engen, McFarland; Charlie Brown, Racine; Mike Johnston, Milwaukee; Dustin Schwab, Waunakee; Tom Befera, Kenosha; Owen Butler, Fitchburg; John Freeman, Muskego; Nick Luebke, Middleton.76 - Troy Bilderback, Waunakee; Andrew Barrett, Brown Deer; Jeff Kaiser, Onalaska; Todd Schaap, Kenosha; Brook Schmitt, Janesville; Steve Krause, Hales Corners; Gary Menzel, Milwaukee; Derek Pirkl, Stoughton; Tyler Obermueller, River Falls; Jim Schuman, Verona; Travis Meyer, River Falls; Mark Bemowski, Mukwonago; Michael Crowley, Whitefish Bay; Matt Behm, Janesville; Kevin Van Rossum, Hartland; Jim Doing, Verona; Connor Reeves, Kenosha.77 - Jeff Budd, Prairie du Sac; Brian Brodell, Verona; Carolyn Barnett-Howe, Appleton; Jordan Elsen, Kenosha; Michael Gant, Verona; Jim Buyze, Eau Claire; Keith Stelzer, Green Bay; Mike Williams, Lake Geneva; Jason Navarro, Waukesha; Tony Arvold, Beaver Dam; Kelly Kretz, Antigo; Mike Muranyi, Monroe; Curt Larson, Milwaukee; Michael McDonald, Germantown; Matt Kennedy, Madison; Tim Cox, Brookfield; Richard Bartley, Madison.78 - Kevin Kramp, Greendale; Chad Cantwell, Twin Lakes; Jason Klein, Greenville; Troy Schmidt, Germantown; Bill Winkler, Racine; Ricky Hearden, Green Bay; Joe DeRosa, La Crosse; Michael Haase, Genoa City; Derek Hilmershausen, Wausau; Robert Pyle, Green Bay; Jason Fitchett, Johnson Creek; Michael Bielawski, West Allis; Joel Rechlicz, Fitchburg; Tyler Leis, Eau Claire; Dan Buckley, Rhinelander; Brett Tautges, Hartford.79 - Chad Behrends, River Hills; Craig Czerniejewski, Watertown; David Wente, Kenosha; Jonathan Klemp, Mequon; Andrew Longbella, Chippewa Falls.80 - Dave Spengler, Egg Harbor; Daniel Hoffman; New Berlin; Loren Churness, Eau Galle; Greg Dick, Sherman, Texas; David Hopkins, Eau Claire.81 - Scott Cole, New Richmond; Doug Krause, Milton; Elliot Retzlaff, Kenosha; Lance Marting, Janesville; Doug Mortola, Bayside; Craig Cerbins, Berlin.82 - Patrick Duffy, Appleton; Jim Rollefson, New Berlin; David Foley, Pewaukee; Craig Hoesly, Monroe; Eric Gitter, Hubertus; Ryan Schullo, Spooner; Greg Seefeldt, Oshkosh; Mike Coulthard, Neenah; Patrick Murphy, Middleton; Hanc Spivey, Brown Deer.83 - Matt Vandelac, Hayward; Jason Hogue, Green Bay; Thomas Halla, Colgate; Taylor Koser, Rice Lake.84 - Sean Halverson, Janesville; Bill Kokott, Madison; Michael Mueller, Fond du Lac; Mike Hilton, Muskego; Daniel Kocinski, Thiensvilee.89 - James Julsrud, Altoona.DQ - Dane Krouse, Wausau....
