Businesses destroyed, damaged by area firesArea businesses destroyed, ... Found: 1 Week 6 Days 8 Hours 18 Minutes ago Leader-Telegram - Fires in Alma Center, Stanley and Fall Creek on Thursday and Friday destroyed two businesses and damaged another and a shed.An electrical malfunction tentatively is being blamed for a fire Thursday afternoon that destroyed Chippewa Bi Products, a company that makes alligator and dog food, and Countryside Hides, which processes deer hides, said Alma Center Fire Chief Jeff Gaede.Emergency officials received a call at 1:39 p.m. Thursday, Gaede said. The companies are housed at the same facility on Lea Brothers Road, just east of Alma Center in Jackson County.Employees said they saw smoke in the eaves section on the northeast side of the building and shut off the power. But the fire spread throughout the 100-foot-long building once it got into the rafters, Gaede said Friday. The building, about 30 to 40 feet wide, was a combination of about 10 or 12 buildings that were added onto over the years under one roof, he said. The building had cement and wood walls and mostly tin roofing. Two excavators used backhoes to separate metal from the burning material at the scene. There were no injuries, and no monetary damage estimate was available. Insurance officials were at the scene Friday, Gaede said.Fire departments from Taylor, Merrillan, Humbird, Hixton, Fairchild, Black River Falls and the state Department of Natural Resources assisted the Alma Center department at the scene. About 100,000 gallons of water were used to extinguish the blaze. Officials left the scene about 7:40 p.m.In Chippewa County, a corn dryer caught fire early Friday at Romanowski Grain Services in Stanley.Fire Chief Ron Zais said the call came at 3:53 a.m., and 17 firefighters responded. They left the scene at 9 a.m., but they had to return at 4:30 p.m. after the fire flared up, he said. "It was a build-up of dirt and chaff (corn husks) that got caught in the burner, and it overheated," Zais said. "It just took off. There's a whole lot of damage."If the corn dryer is a complete loss, replacing it could cost $400,000, Zais said. The building is 50 feet tall, and the cold weather presented a challenge for firefighters, the chief said.Owner Larry Romanowski of Gilman couldn't be reached for comment.Zais said the building is about three years old, and it's located about 1,000 feet south of the Ace Ethanol plant on the west side of Stanley. The Fall Creek Area Fire Department was called to a fire late Friday afternoon at S7385 Suncrest Road, off Hillview Drive, in the town of Lincoln.Fire Chief Bob DeWitz couldn't be reached for comment, but Eau Claire County Sheriff's Department Sgt. Carl Duncan said a wood stove is suspected of causing the fire in the 20-by-30-foot shed....

Starting fastGirls prep basketball: Regis starts season fast with win ... Found: 2 Weeks 4 Hours 57 Minutes ago Leader-Telegram - The defense was intense, the offense fluid and the finish thrilling.Everything about Thursday night's Western Cloverbelt opener between Eau Claire Regis and Altoona suggested a playoff game in March. Everything that is, except for the fact that we're still in November and this was the first game of the season for both teams.Regis freshman Heather Bowe hit two long jumpers in the fourth quarter and senior point guard Kara Poirier turned in big plays on both ends of the floor in the final minute, rallying the Ramblers to a 62-60 home victory that had everyone buzzing afterward."I'm thinking we just won our sectional semifinal," Regis coach Brady Hoolihan said. "Our kids dug deep. It came down to defensive stops, and we got them when we needed to."Regis overcame 21 points and 19 rebounds from Altoona senior Brittany Gregorich. The Rails tried to give her a shot to tie or win the game but the Ramblers completely took her out of the play, leaving Altoona with a 3-pointer that fell short at the buzzer."For an opening game, this was the best game I've ever been involved in or seen this early in the season," Altoona coach Scott Harmon said.Bowe led the Ramblers with 16 points and 11 rebounds, but it was Poirier's heady play in the final minute that helped Regis end a three-game losing streak against its conference rivals.Poirier tied the game at 60 on a give-and-go with 40 seconds left. On defense, she caused a turnover when Altoona tried to dump the ball down low, calling a timeout as she fell out of bounds with the ball."She's not going to let us lose too many games this year," said Hoolihan, who pulled Poirier aside before the game and said 'Act like you've been there.'Mary Gallagher made two free throws to give the Ramblers a two-point lead. Altoona tried to set up Gregorich off a screen but Regis defended it well and came away with the victory.Poirier finished with 14 points and five rebounds, looking every bit like the four-year varsity player she is."I have been through this before," she said. "I wasn't nervous, not because I've been through this before, but because of the teammates around me. I trust every single one of them, freshman through senior, and I know they have my back.Altoona grabbed a seven-point lead early in the fourth quarter after Bethany Reyzer hit consecutive 3-pointers - one of which beat the third-quarter buzzer - but couldn't add to the lead. The Rails had four turnovers in the fourth quarter and went 4:30 without a point, letting Regis back in.The 6-foot Bowe played beyond her years in the fourth quarter, scoring six poitns in a 1-minute stretch and coming away with a couple of big offensive rebounds."She was the difference in the game," Harmon said. "She outplayed our bigs, for the most part, inside."The loss wasn't too hard to swallow for Altoona, last year's conference co-champion. The Western Cloverbelt race is considered a three-team ordeal, with the other co-champion, Osseo-Fairchild, in the mix as well. And while the game had a March feel, it's still early."We did what we could," Gregorich said. "We came up short and that's always a bummer, but we have to look on the bright side and know that we did do some nice things. "We'll keep working hard."EAU CLAIRE REGIS 62, ALTOONA 60Altoona - Monica Rasmussen 4, Brittany Gregorich 21, Gwen Fredericksen 2, Rachel Larson 16, Brooke Richardson 5, Bethany Reyzer 10, Ashley Draeger 1, Kate Hansen 1. Need for speedWomen's basketball: Blugolds looking to run Found: 2 Weeks 2 Days 6 Hours 12 Minutes ago Leader-Telegram - This season's UW-Eau Claire women's basketball team was built for speed. The guards are agile. The forwards are light on their feet. Top to bottom, this roster was meant to run the floor. And the Blugolds plan to take advantage of it more than ever.Embracing the frenetic pace of play they built themselves around last year, the Blugolds of 2008-'09 figure to bring more pressure, create more scoring opportunities and push the tempo more than any team in coach Tonja Englund's nine-year tenure."I would say that we will be more up-tempo than we ever have been," Englund said after practice Friday afternoon at Zorn Arena."It's a different look for us, but I like it."So much so, in fact, that the Blugolds' starting lineup that opens the season at the Ripon College tournament this weekend likely will be willing to sacrifice some size to enhance its speed."We're much quicker, I think, in all the positions," said senior point guard Heather Witt, one of 11 returning letterwinners. "We're looking to be a high-tempo team."It will start at the top of the key with floor general Witt, who will share the court with fellow point guard Missy Fremstad - a key reserve last season - in an effort to maximize the Blugolds' speed."I like the fact that Missy and Heather also complement each other well in that they both can play the top," Englund said. "I feel like we can handle pressure better, as well. "The big key with that group is in that we have to rebound well because we'll be a little bit smaller than we have been in the past. That group is really going to have to board hard."Thorp native Heidi Arciszewski, the Blugolds' athletic third guard and top returning scorer at 13.2 points per game, will run with them after being named to the all-Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference first team last season."It's a completely different look for us," Englund said. "It's a pressing-and-running group. They're wide-open, and they love to run."Arciszewski, who can score on the perimeter and off the dribble, will provide balance between the point guards and the forwards inside, where sophomore Hannah Mesick is back after starting as a freshman last season. She'll team up with either Ashley Anderson or Jodi Lindner, and all three can fit in the Blugolds' fast-paced system."I think we can push the tempo even more this year," said Fremstad, a senior and Osseo-Fairchild graduate. There are holes to be filled, to be sure. The most glaring absence is that of former Eau Claire North standout Michelle Burns, who was the WIAC's player of the year last season. Also gone from the team that won a share of the WIAC regular-season championship and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Division III tournament are versatile guard Amanda Zenner and sharpshooting specialist Rachel Mueggenborg."They were all dominant players on our team," said Witt, who averaged 8.2 points and 3.7 assists per game last winter. "We're having people step up right now and fill those roles really well. We're finding ways to exploit the other talents on our team. We're going to be pretty quick, and we're going to press a lot and look to push the ball."As the season wears on, the Blugolds could expect increased contribution from a freshman recruiting class Englund called "probably one of the best recruiting classes that we've ever brought in."Perimeter players like Kaylee Cardinal, Chippewa Falls McDonell graduate Jess Freagon, River Falls' Tessa Feyereisen and Clayton's Brittni Hover could make an impact, while 6-foot-5 Ellen Plendl can alter shots in the paint. Their impact will be in addition to that of seasoned senior guard Pam Kaye, whom Englund said was "by far" the team's best defender."Right now, I'm hoping that we're 10- to 12-deep," Englund said. "I like that it's a mix of seniors, but there's also some freshmen that will be on the floor, and there's a nice group of sophomores and juniors, I think, that also can contribute."The Blugolds, ranked No. 25 in the D3Hoops.com preseason poll, will need all hands on deck if they hope to defend their conference co-championship. UW-Whitewater, the WIAC's other champ last season, was ranked No. 1 by both D3Hoops.com and USA Today/ESPN."I think, for this group especially, we've got to rely on experience right away," Englund said. "Our experience has got to step up for us. And then, as time goes on, some of our freshmen have really got to progress to make us a little bit deeper as a team."After the Blugolds ended their four-year Division III tournament drought last season, this year's seniors - Witt, Arciszewski, Fremstad, Anderson and Kaye - can make it two trips in a row for the Blugolds for the first time since 2000-'01."What we've always tried to really key on is, we needed back-to-back really good classes," Englund said, "and I think that we have that now this year."...

Eau Claire Memorial product Katie Pospishil had surgery on knee in the offseason and won't play this season. Program has eight freshmen. Englund was impressed with the development of Plendl.- Outlook: Despite losing WIAC player of the year Michelle Burns and starter Amanda Zenner, the Blugolds don't have many holes to fill. If it can win on the road like it did last season, UW-Eau Claire could compete for another conference title.- Schedule: November 21 - vs. Ripon at Ripon Tip Off Tourney, 8 p.m. 22 - vs. Concordia at Ripon Tip Off Tourney, 1 p.m. 25 - St. Norbert, 7 p.m. 28-29 - Thanksgiving Showcase at Zorn Arena.December 3 - at Minnesota-Duluth, 7 p.m. 6 - UW-Stout, 5 p.m. 10 - UW-Platteville, 7 p.m. 13 - UW-La Crosse, 5 p.m. 20 - at South Dakota, 1 p.m. 27-28 - at Otterbein Tournament in Westerville, Ohio.January 7 - at UW-Superior, 7 p.m. 17 - UW-River Falls, 5 p.m. 21 - at UW-Stevens Point, 7 p.m. 24 - at UW-La Crosse, 5 p.m. 28 - UW-Superior, 7 p.m. 31 - UW-Whitewater, 5 p.m.February 4 - at UW-Oshkosh, 7 p.m. 7 - at UW-River Falls, 5 p.m. 11 - UW-Stevens Point, 7 p.m. 18 - at UW-Platteville, 7 p.m. 21 - at UW-Stout, 5 p.m. 24 - WIAC playoffs.UW-Stout- Head coach: Mark Thomas, 22nd season (372-190).- Last season: 17-10, 10-6 WIAC.- Top players: Julia Hirssig, jr., 5-11, F; Charlee Edwards, sr., 5-9, G; Dani Boese, sr., 6-1, C.- Others: Alex Suda, soph., 5-4, G; Becky Wyngaard, soph., 5-9, G; Stacy Bush, jr., 5-7, G; Alisha Todd, soph., 5-4, G; Kristen Laramy, soph., F, 5-9; Lindsey Gerber, sr., 5-6, G; Cody VanDenHeuvel, frosh., 5-7, G; Danielle DeWitt, jr., 5-11, G/F; Carissa Walsh, frosh., 5-9, G; Brittney Gerber, soph., 5-8, G; Tricia VanVreede, soph., 6-0, F; Kim Stokke, jr., 5-9, G; Megan Maslowski, jr., 5-11, F; Lindsey Brost, frosh., 5-9, F; Chelsey Huppert, frosh., 5-7, F; Tanya Dickey, frosh., 5-7, G; Chelsey Weber, soph., 5-7, G; Nikki Wyngaard, sr., 5-9, G.- Notes: Hirssig led the conference in scoring (16.1) and rebounds (9.1) as a sophomore. Hunter (Eau Claire Regis) started 77 of 79 career games and could become first in school history to be named all-WIAC all four seasons. Wahl set school record with 125 free throws made and 170 free throws attempted last season. Doesn't play a game outside of Wisconsin, Minnesota or Iowa.- Outlook: The Eagles' experience will help battle the top programs in the WIAC, but they might not have enough firepower to consistently compete with the best.UW-Oshkosh- Head coach: Terri Schumacher, fourth season (37-40).- Last season: 10-16, 5-11.- Top players: Michelle Boeder, soph., 5-9, G; Erin Baganz, soph., 5-8, G; Tiffany Pugh, soph., 5-8, G.- Notes: Graduated just one senior (all-WIAC first-team F Whitney Tyriver) but still quite young with five freshmen, nine spohomores, one junior and no seniors. Eight players have started at least four games. Amber Goljenboom (5-11, soph.) should be a force down low after missing most of last season. Lost six of last seven last season but pounded UW-Stevens Point, 59-42, at home.- Outlook: The Titans will be better than last season, but its still going to be a year or two before Schumacher and company are back among the WIAC elite.UW-Platteville- Head coach: Tina Kuhle, fifth season (129-118 in 11 seasons overall; 45-59 at UW-Platteville).- Last season: 11-15, 5-11.- Top players: Lisa Grantman, sr., 5-10, F; Vanessa Nemitz, jr., 5-9, G; Angie Vamstad, soph., 5-7, G.- Notes: Team set a school record for 3-pointers made (161). Gregorich and Hanson - both Altoona grads - will split time at PG. Lost to Wisconsin, 71-38, in exhibition game.- Outlook: The Falcons have just two upperclassmen on the roster, meaning they'll have to do a lot of learning as they go. This will be a team to keep an eye on in a few years.UW-Stevens Point- Head coach: Shirley Egner, 20th season (332-164).- Last season: 24-5, 12-4 WIAC.- Top players: Jessi Sporle, sr., 6-0, F; Katie Webber, sr., 5-9, G; Janell Van Gomple, sr., 5-9, G.- Notes: Graduated six seniors that accounted for 1,193 of the team's 2,166 points. Have won at least 20 games in seven of past eight seasons. Hit double figures in WIAC victories eight straight seasons. Won WIAC tournament last year by beating top two teams on the road. Sporle and Webber are lone returning starters. Could play UW-Eau Claire four times this season.- Outlook: The Pointers don't rebuild. They reload. They may not be at the level of UW-Eau Claire and UW-Whitewater this season, but they aren't too far back.UW-Superior- Head coach: Donald Mulhern, third season (188-246 in 17 seasons overall; 13-37 at UW-Superior).- Last season: 5-20, 1-15.- Top players: Anna Petersen, soph., F; Kelsey Thingvold, soph., G/F.- Notes: Roster includes 14 newcomers - 11 freshmen, three junior college transfers. Hasn't finished out of WIAC cellar since 2003-'04 (tied for seventh) and hasn't finished higher than fifth since it was first place in the North Section of the WIAC in 1983-'84. Play 11 of first 14 games on the road.- Outlook: The newcomers will only help as the Yellowjackets try to climb up the WIAC ladder. They'll be better than they were last year, but there still a ways away from the upper echelon.UW-Whitewater- Head coach: Keri Carollo, seventh season (94-68).- Last season: 29-4, 14-2.- Top players: Tiffany Morton, sr., 6-0, C; Heidi Sonntag, jr., 5-6, G; Kelsey Hendrickson, jr., 5-7, G.- Notes: Finished third in the NCAA tournament. Ranked No. 1 in the d3hoops.com preseason poll. Return 18 letterwinners and three starters. Morton (14.9 ppg, 8.7 rpg, 54 fg percent) is a player of the year candidate. - Outlook: The Warhawks are once again loaded. After last season, anything less than a WIAC title and deep tournament run is a disappointment.- John Casper Jr....
