http://www.axtora.com/homesites/us/wisconsin/fairchild/content/9b108688c471f06c10839f2150453d1a.html OSSEO For all intents and purposes the OsseoFairchild girls basketball team had no business beating Altoona in a Western Cloverbelt Conference game Thursday nightNot with two allconference starters on the bench in street clothes Not after it missed its first nine free throws and gave up offensive rebound after offensive rebound Not after the visiting Railroaders built a 15point lead midway through the third quarter and still held a 10point lead with 3 minutes 12 seconds leftBut that didn't discourage the Chieftains Not one bitJamie Mattison hit two big 3pointers in the final 39 seconds and Sarah Lundberg's 12foot jumper with 1 second left was the gamewinner as the Chieftains came out of nowhere to stun the Railroaders 4644 in a game that could shape the remainder of the season for both teamsIt's a huge win for us as far as the conference goes and seeding for the regional said OsseoFairchild coach Matt Korger who was without two of his best players in Laura Petersen and Letaya Mulhern I told the girls that I still expect to win I don't want to give up any games The girls we have are still very good playersTwo of them stepped up in a big way Mattison a defensive specialist last season hit a 3pointer with 39 seconds left to cut the lead to 4241 with 39 seconds left After Altoona's Brittany Gregorich hit a runner in the lane to push the lead back to three Mattison hit another 3 with 19 seconds left to tie the game at 44I wasn't expecting those to go in Mattison said I guess it was my game I was onAfter Altoona turned over the ball its seventh of the fourth quarter Mattison had an open look at another 3pointer from the wing with about 7 seconds left but decided to pass to LundbergI was just thinking of my team and thinking of who would have a better shot Mattison said I thought if I'd miss and they got the rebound they'd have another shotTurned out to be a good decision Lundberg who finished with a gamehigh 14 points hit the shotEvery day we work on one dribble and a shot said Lundberg whose offensive rebound led to Mattison's first 3pointer I saw Brittany Gregorich in my face and I took one dribble went up and it went inIt was another punch in the gut for the Railroaders 12 12 who lost to Eau Claire Regis by two points in the season openerThey made the plays when they had to make the plays a frustrated Altoona coach Scott Harmon said They deserved to win and we didn'tAltoona led comfortably for the majority of the game but it unraveled quickly Aside from Gregorich's basket the Rails turned over the ball five times and missed a layup in the final 3 minutesWe were just forcing any turnover we could Lundberg saidKorger said he installed a double defense this week It certainly paid off as the Chieftains finished the game on a 142 runThat got us back in the game Korger said That was huge Our girls flew around they were diving on the floor They were so excitedThe victory is a huge confidence booster for OsseoFairchild 40 20 which will be without Petersen a Division II University of Mary recruit until Christmas with a broken finger Mulhern a junior who led the Chieftains in scoring in 2006'07 will be out until at least January with a back injuryThis group showed some people tonight they are for real Korger saidOSSEOFAIRCHILD 46 ALTOONA ball boy ever since first grade Always grew up around ChiHi football It was nice to be able to play at such a special placeOlson whose father Bart is a Chippewa Falls assistant did more than just wear a Redbirds jersey He was on the varsity as a sophomore was an allconference defensive back as a junior and rarely left the field as a senior He played an integral role in what one of the best twoyear runs in Chippewa Falls history The Cardinals went 173 in Olson's junior and senior years including two victories over rival Menomonie and a perfect 140 mark in the Big Rivers ConferenceThat was more than enough to make Olson the 57th annual LeaderTelegram AllNorthwest player of the yearHe was 100 percent dedicated to the sport and ChiHi football Cardinals coach Chuck Raykovich said His success was not an accidentHe was a threeyear varsity player at Chippewa Falls playing on offense defense and special teams after spending his childhood tagging along with his father Bart a Cardinals assistantIt was at quarterback where Olson's true football smarts shone through Raykovich and offensive coordinator Ed Watkins added some new looks to the Cardinals' offense to take advantage of Olson's athleticism sometimes straying away from the traditional doublewing look But even in the doublewing Olson needed to be on his game He had the responsibility to look over the defense and make adjustments if necessaryIf they had Hudson's Seth Stanchik or Menomonie's Kyle Ahrens on one side you'd go up to the line and flip it said Olson who has a 398 GPAThe best example of Olson's leadership came in a 2827 overtime victory over Superior at Dorais Field The Cardinals blew a 140 lead and found themselves trailing by a touchdown with 4 minutes 24 seconds left The offense which gained just one first down since the middle of the second quarter took over at its own 45We never thought we were going to lose Olson said We came out and played hard and did what we needed to do Everyone knew it was time to go to workOlson was the firestarter He wasn't perfect but he made things happen First it was a 9yard screen pass to running back Michael Adams Then it was a 14yard strike to Cole Zwiefelhofer on thirdand10 A pass interference call on Superior gave the Cardinals another first down Then Olson capped the drive with one of the gutsiest 7yard runs you'll ever see a quarterback make The Cardinals went on to win the game in overtime with Olson throwing a touchdown passHe has credibility because of the time and effort he put into the program Raykovich said He wasn't just a shouter He was a doer It's easy to believe people like thatOlson was named cooffensive player of the year in the Big Rivers and was firstteam allBig Rivers at both quarterback and defensive backThe only thing playoffs beating St Croix Falls and Mondovi before falling to BaldwinWoodvilleBut Olson doesn't think about what could have been had he stayed in BloomerI never once regretted my decision Olson said So happy I went to Chippewa Falls Tons of great opportunities and lots of great people I had a chance to meetThere will be football in Olson's future He's just not sure where He's taken official visits to MinnesotaMoorhead and Winona State both Division II schools He's going to take three moreMost of the schools are looking at him to play defense but now that film from his senior year is women's basketball team didn't do everything right Friday night but the final score of its fourth straight victory won't show itThat tends to happen when a team shoots the lights outThe No 25 Blugolds shot nearly 70 percent from the floor in the first half flew out to a big halftime lead and were able to pull their starters early in an 8045 victory over St Olaf Minn in the first round of the 17th annual Thanksgiving Showcase at Zorn ArenaWe were just feeling it said Blugolds point guard Heather Witt who led four players in double figures with 18 pointsWe made the extra pass and got the ball to our open shootersTheir convincing victory moved coach Tonja Englund's Blugolds 40 into the Showcase's championship game They face Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference rival UWStevens Point at 8 pm todayThe Pointers who received votes in the d3hoopscom preseason poll came into Zorn Arena and defeated the Blugolds in the WIAC tournament championship game last seasonThe team has talked about that for an entire offseason Englund said Obviously it was not the way that we wanted to end in Zorn last year The Pointers advanced to the title game of the Showcase with an equally dominant 7546 victory over Luther Iowa shooting 706 percent in the first half We're looking forward to tomorrow so much said Witt who scored 15 of her points in the first half and had great success stretching out the Oles defense We have a chip on our shoulder a little bit We have something to prove and we're going to take back our titleDespite a start that was a bit inconsistent and not always smooth the Blugolds raced out to a 5123 halftime lead behind 667 percent 20 of 30 shooting from the field Their hot hands especially were on display from behind the 3point line where the Blugolds hit 5 of 7 in the first half and made the Oles pay when they shifted from mantoman into a zone defenseI was really pleased in the first half with the way that we handled them changing defenses Englund said What this team has had to get better at was making an extra pass and passing up a good shot for a great shot and they did thatThe Blugolds finished the game shooting 525 percent from the field a result of hitting 379 percent 11 of 29 in the second half The lowered statistic however came as the tradeoff for emptying their bench and allowing this season's deep recruiting class to get time on the floorAmong the freshmen who played Friday night were former Chippewa Falls McDonell teammates Jess Freagon and Ellen Plendl OsseoFairchild graduate Laura Olson River Falls' Tessa Feyereisen and Independence's Callie HalamaI thought what was really nice tonight is that we were able to go deeper into our bench and have an opportunity for a lot of our younger players to get on the floor maybe work through a little bit of nervousness Englund saidThorp's Heidi Arciszewski had 13 points and Osseo's Missy Fremstad scored 11 for the Blugolds who hurt the Oles when they collapsed their defense into the paint Sophomore forward Hannah Mesick had 10 points while working around the crowd insideIt's a good thing for us to see that because I think it's going to take some of the pressure off Hannah on the inside Englund saidSince the Thanksgiving Showcase began in 1991 the Blugolds have won it all but twiceOne of those times was last season when they dropped a 5649 decision to the
