Family expresses outrageMan accused of homicide in death of ex-wife
Found: 2 Weeks 1 Day 8 Hours 20 Minutes ago
Leader-Telegram - BLACK RIVER FALLS - Douglas Sidie's lies caught up with him.The 39-year-old rural Merrillan man now faces 11 criminal charges and the anger of relatives who once trusted him.Sidie, 39, shackled and dressed in Jackson County Jail orange, mostly kept his head bowed Wednesday as he entered and sat in the courtroom to face charges, including first-degree intentional homicide, in the shooting death of his ex-wife, Alisha Sidie, 27.Douglas Sidie periodically raised his head and answered softly from the defendant's table, where he sat alone. He faces life in prison if convicted of the homicide charge."It is confusing why he would do this," Tracy Rowlee, 18, Alisha's sister, of Black River Falls, said after the hearing. "He knew all along what happened to her. True justice will happen when he gets before God."Another sister, Melissa Sandavol, 23, also of Black River Falls, said it was "hard to look at him. I just want justice. I want him to be in prison for life."Both women said they cared for Douglas Sidie but were angered by how he treated them, other family members and the police when lying about Alisha's whereabouts.Sidie is charged with shooting his former wife outside a home they shared in the community of Hatfield with their 2-year-old twin sons, who now are staying with relatives. Sidie told police on Saturday, eight days after his wife's death, that he shot her through the left eye with a .22-caliber revolver while they were arguing, according to court records.Sidie eventually showed police where the woman's body could be found (a wooded area off Waterbury Road), and where he threw the gun (in Morris Creek), both in the town of Komensky. Both were recovered. But Sidie's admissions came days after he'd told police and the media that he did not know where his wife went after an argument around 9 or 10 p.m.Sheriff Duane Waldera said it didn't take long for police to realize Sidie's account largely was false."There was no way this woman with two young children was going to walk away and not have any contact afterward with her family," Waldera said after Wednesday's hearing. "It just made no sense, so we knew his story had some problems."He set himself up with his story in a direction that he had to follow," Waldera said. "He had no way out, and eventually he knew we had him."Scores of officers, family members and others searched the area near the Sidie residence for days without success. But police learned on Friday that an adult staying at the Sidie residence on the night of the shooting had witnessed incriminating actions by Sidie, according to police records.State Division of Criminal Investigation agent John Christophersen spoke with Sidie on Saturday, and he gave a detailed account of killing Alisha Sidie, according to court records."We had information from several sources that didn't match with what he was telling us," Waldera said. "I think he knew things weren't fitting and he was in trouble."Sidie told police that he and his ex-wife were arguing when he picked up the handgun from an ATV rack. He said they continued to argue as they walked back to the house, and he shot her once when she turned to face him.He said he put her body in his 1996 pickup truck, which has been impounded by police, and drove to a wooded area where he left her body, buried her purse and returned home.An autopsy report indicates Alisha Sidie died from a traumatic brain injury from a single gunshot wound through her eye and into her brain.Sidie is charged with felony counts of first-degree intentional homicide and hiding a corpse, a misdemeanor count of bail jumping and eight misdemeanor counts of obstructing an officer.Judge Thomas Lister ordered Sidie be held without bond and scheduled another hearing for Tuesday.A St. Paul attorney has been contacted to represent Sidie, but the attorney said on Wednesday afternoon that he has not been hired....
