Shakedown costs argued at McGee sentencing
Found: 1 Month 1 Week 4 Days 7 Hours 30 Minutes ago
Milwaukee Journal Sentinel - Sentencing for Michael McGee got off to a slow start today as lawyers debate the amount of money allegedly lost by the government's chief witness because of McGee's shakedowns.McGee, a former Milwaukee alderman convicted of bribery and other crimes, cost store owner Adel "Jack" Kheirieh more than $183,000 over two years, Assistant U.S. Attorney Joseph Wall said. For more than an hour this morning, Wall and defense attorney Calvin Malone questioned Kheirieh about where he lost money because of McGee. There were bribes, cell phones and more than $20,000 in food paid to McGee and others, Kheirieh said, adding he lost another $100,000 because McGee wouldn'tlet him sell his business when he wanted to. McGee controlled his liquor license, Kheirieh said. The dispute over the loss amount could mean two years one way or the other on McGee's prison sentence. The pre-sentence report calls for McGee to receive 12 to 15 years in prison, but that could drop depending on whether U.S. District Judge Charles Clevert accepts all of the prosecution's loss amounts. In any case, Clevert is not bound by the guidelines. The courtroom is full, with more than three dozen McGee supporters and others. Clevert has broken for lunch with the sentencing resuming at 1:30 p.m....
