Highway 45 north of Oshkosh opens Sept. 5 Found: 3 Months 1 Week 4 Days 12 Hours 15 Minutes ago Fond du lac Reporter - OSHKOSH -- A ribbon of four-lane road from Oshkosh to Winchester is poised to open.State Highway 45, formerly known as State Highway 110, should be open by Sept. 5 or before if permanent signage is completed, said officials from the Wisconsin Department of Transportation Northeast Regional office in Green Bay.
Were very happy the project is coming to completion. It should be a major improvement to the traveling public, said Bill Bertrand, project manager for the DOT in Green Bay. Were hopeful it will open before Sept. 5.
Bertrand said the DOT recognized that Highway 45 is a major route for tourism.
This will definitely help the movement of traffic and should improve safety, he said.
The Highway 45 expansion project, Bertrand said, is completed about a month ahead of schedule. From Highway 45, drivers can connect with Highway 10 that is four lanes to Waupaca and beyond.
Sharon Mathison, Winchester town clerk, said it will be heaven when the expanded Highway 45 opens.
We have a daughter who lives in Winneconne, so we used a detour to get there, she said.
The project started in September and added two lanes east of the existing road on a nearly five-mile stretch of Highway 45 from County Trunk G to County Trunk II at Winchester. The roadway has been closed to traffic the past three months. Detours were set up for drivers.
That section of Highway 45 had been the last two-lane section of road between U.S. Highway 41 and the Winnebago County line.
All of the concrete has been poured for the project. The last tasks to be completed for the expansion project include landscaping, pavement markings and permanent signage.
When opened for traffic, a 65 mph speed limit will be posted on Highway 45, replacing the 55 mph speed limit from Oshkosh.
Cost of the Highway 45 expansion is about $6 million and is funded 80 percent by federal funds and 20 percentfrom state transportation funds. Michels Materials of Brownsville was the prime contractor for the project.
Bertrand said tentative plans for Highway 45 from Oshkosh to County Trunk II include overpasses constructed at Breezewood Lane, Grandview Road and at Lakeview Road/Oakridge Road. Also, frontage roads are planned on the east and west sides of Highway 45.
However, Bertrand said the overpasses and frontage roads are tentatively scheduled for construction in 2016....
