Playoff teams enjoying ridePrep football: New Auburn, others enjoying ... Found: 1 Month 1 Week 3 Days 2 Hours 24 Minutes ago Leader-Telegram - Early Friday evening Keenan Dahl was losing his voice, operating on just three hours of sleep Thursday night and a bunch of teenagers were threatening to shave his head. And he was loving every minute of it.New Auburn, which just two years ago ended a 31-game losing streak, qualified for the WIAA football playoffs with a triple-overtime victory over Lake Holcombe on Thursday night. It's the first time the Trojans have been to the postseason since 2001."It was kind of a crazy day," Dahl said. "We had a lot of stuff going on. A lot of e-mails, a lot of compiling stats, a lot of congratulations going around."There was a buzz in the air all day. The kids were pretty pumped about it and everyone is excited."The Trojans play at Gilman (8-1), which won the Cloverwood Conference title and is a No. 2 seed in Division 7. All first round games are scheduled for 7 p.m. Tuesday night.Dahl had to calm down his players a bit before Friday's practice to get them to focus on the task at hand. Not that you can blame them. New Auburn hasn't won more than two games in a season since making the playoffs and lost its first three games of this season by a combined score of 119-16. That's when defensive coordinator Mike Dombrowski said he would get a Mohawk if the Trojans made the playoffs."We're having a pep rally on Tuesday and the players are going to shave it then," said Dahl, adding that his players are trying to do the same for him but he's not biting.Another team breathing a sigh of relief Friday was Fall Creek. According to analysis done by www.WisFootball.net, the Crickets were the last team to make the playoff field. Not all teams with a .500 conference record are guaranteed spots. Fall Creek, which lost to Altoona on Thursday night to finish 4-4 in the Cloverbelt, squeaked in on one of the tiebreakers the WIAA uses to determine which teams make the field and which ones don't. The Crickets (4-5) play at Whitehall.Elsewhere:- In Division 1, Chippewa Falls (9-0) - as expected - received a No. 1 seed and hosts Bay Port (7-2), which was the odd team out and has to travel 3 hours on a school night. The Big Rivers champion Cardinals will play either Green Bay Preble (7-2) or No. 4 seed Appleton North (7-2) in the second round if they beat Bay Port. - Menomonie's 30-28 victory over River Falls was huge in terms of playoff seedings. The Indians (6-3) received a No. 3 seed and host Merrill (6-3). The Wildcats (6-3) were sent on the road to play No. 4 seed La Crosse Central.- In Division 4, Dunn-St. Croix champion Mondovi (8-1) earned a No. 1 seed in a grouping of local schools that could make deep playoff runs. Durand (5-4) travels 17 miles down Highway 37 to play the Buffaloes. Bloomer (7-2), which won its first seven games of the season, has to go on the road to play No. 4 seed St. Croix Falls (8-1). At the other end of the grouping, Somerset (6-3) earned the No. 2 seed ahead of Baldwin-Woodville (8-1). The teams shared the Middle Border title after Somerset handed Baldwin-Woodville its first loss Thursday. Altoona (5-4) plays at the third-seeded Blackhawks while Somerset hosts St. Croix Central (7-2).- Some area teams in Division 6 received tough draws.Eleva-Strum (7-2), the defending Division 7 champions, moved up one division and gets to play at five-time defending state champion Stratford (8-1) in the first round. On the other side of the bracket, two overtime losses hurt Owen-Withee (7-2). The Blackhawks have to play at top seed Edgar (9-0). Stratford and Edgar have been the two best small schools in The Associated Press poll all season. Teams improve in 2008Ron Buckli column: Blair-Taylor, others made big ... Found: 1 Month 1 Week 5 Days 4 Hours 45 Minutes ago Leader-Telegram - It is said the mark of a champion is his ability to get up after he is knocked down. That happens with teams as well as individuals.Case-in-point, Blair-Taylor. The Wildcats won once last year - over winless Alma Center Lincoln. It was a victory that kept them out of the Dairyland basement. This year somebody must have turned the standings upside-down. It shows Blair-Taylor first and the undisputed Dairyland champion - following state champion Eleva-Strum. It's true. There have been some other notable turnarounds in northwest Wisconsin football. Webster has gone from 1-8 to a current 7-1 and a tie for second in the Large Lakeland.St. Croix Central was 2-7 in 2007 and is 6-2 a year later. Northwestern has gone from 1-8 to 5-3, St. Croix Falls from 4-5 to 8-0 and Osseo-Fairchild from 1-8 to 4-4.And locally, Altoona has turned last year's 2-7 into 4-4 and even better, Eau Claire Regis is 5-3 after going 2-7 last year. When it comes to the playoffs, last year's spectators will be this years participants.Playing the Numbers Game:0 - Losses for Chippewa Falls, wins for Memorial.1 - Blocked punt to go along with 130 rushing yards and three TDs for Michael Adams of Chippewa Falls.2 - Hank Kujak TD passes that gave Blair-Taylor its win.3 - Ties most losses for Menomonie in 17 years.5 - Touchdowns scored by River Falls' Levi Johnson in the first half. 6 - Shutouts posted last weekend.10 - Running clocks.14 - Enough points for Durand to clinch playoff spot.15 - Wins in past 16 games for Chippewa Falls.21 - Seconds remaining when New Auburn's Ian Ziperski takes TD pass to beat Cornell.47 - Points scored by Mondovi in first half.56.8 - Yards per carry for Bruce's Kurt Johnson on four attempts.60 - Points scored by the Baldwin-Woodville express.63 - TD run by Spring Valley's Tyler Bosshart.64 - TD run by Spring Valley's Tyler Bosshart.66 - Luke Brown's TD punt return - his second of the game - for St. Croix Central.70 - Yards return of a fumble for a TD by Avery Sega of Memorial.80 - TD run by Spring Valley's Tyler Bosshart.86 - Spencer Olejniczak's TD run for Thorp.89 - Joey Hamblin's TD return of an intercepted pass for Hayward.90 - Yards for a TD by Elk Mound's Derek Sousa on kickoff return.160 - Yards rushing for Owen-Withee's Zach Pomputis.175 - Yards rushing for Hayward's Bucky Dixon.223 - Matching passing yards for Altoona's Brodie Johnson and Osseo-Fairchild's Matt Vold in head-to-head play.227 - Kurt Johnson's rushing yardage.270 - Total yards winner Hayward outgained by Bloomer.300 - Yards rushing for Spring Valley's Tyler Bosshart.338 - Points piled up by Colby.339 - Kurt Johnson's yards receiving and rushing for Bruce.347 - Yards rushing and passing for Altoona's Brodie Johnson.569 - Total yards amassed by Bloomer in defeat.570 - Jarrod Martell's yards gained receiving for McDonell.1.000 - Winning percentage of seven remaining unbeatens (Chippewa Falls, Baldwin-Woodville, Hayward, St. Croix Falls, Shell Lake, Colby, Plum City)....
Underdog no morePrep Volleyball: Regis not sneaking up on anyone Found: 1 Month 2 Weeks 6 Minutes ago Leader-Telegram - At this time last season, the Eau Claire Regis volleyball team was a bit more anonymous.A No. 3 seed in the WIAA Division 3 playoffs last year, the Ramblers thrived in the role of underdog, surprising everyone but themselves during their run to the D3 state tournament semifinals. "Nobody expected a whole lot of us, but our team knew that they should," fourth-year Ramblers coach Erika Johnson said before practice Friday at Regis High School. "We knew they should be more ready for us because we didn't have anything to lose."Not this year. The Ramblers aren't a No. 3 seed in their regional anymore. Instead, they're the No. 3-ranked D3 team in the state, according to the Wisconsin Volleyball Coaches Association. They're not sneaking up on anybody. They're the team with something to lose."We're not the underdogs anymore," Ramblers senior setter Brianna Plank said. "We are the ones expected to go to state, so we have to play up to it."Driven by the swagger and momentum that comes with an undefeated season in a tough Western Cloverbelt Conference, the Ramblers were a clear choice for their regional's top seed and begin their trek back toward state in Friday's regional semifinals."We're really, really excited because we know that we have the confidence now," Ramblers senior outside hitter Breanna Farley said, "and we know exactly what we need to do to get back there again."The Ramblers' destination? Green Bay's Resch Center, which will be the site of the state tournament from Nov. 6-8. It was there that the Ramblers suffered a 23-25, 25-21, 25-16, 25-20 defeat at the hands of Cuba City in the state semifinals last fall."I think now that we lost in the first round last year, we know exactly what we have to do to get to the second round," said Farley, one of six all-WCC selections for the Ramblers this fall. "And I think we can do it."It starts later this week for the Ramblers, who received a bye through today's regional quarterfinals and host either No. 4 Mondovi or No. 5 St. Croix Falls at 7 p.m. Friday."I think it just comes with knowing how exciting it was to be at Green Bay and how hard it is to get there and that it's probably harder to get back," Johnson said. "These girls are really trying to teach the younger kids what it means to be a part of a team that goes to state. We want everybody on this team to get there together."The Ramblers have a decorated recent history, qualifying for state in 2002, '03, '04 and '07. They were the Division 4 runners-up in 2003 and did the same in 2004 after moving up to D3. The '08 team is without a trio of talented players - Tessa Warner, Clare Bohrer and Megan Smoczyk - from last year but has had great success mixing youth with their state experience."It just teaches them about what there is to lose," Johnson said. "If you've never been to state before, you can't truly understand the experience of all the teams being there and the energy and the spirit. And then, once you lose and you're on the bus on the way back, it sits inside you that you want to get back there."Plank, who was a second-team all-conference pick last fall, joined Farley on the first team this time around. Along with 6-foot freshman center Heather Bowe, senior defensive specialist Stephanie Pica-Anderson and senior outside hitter Kristina Lund made the second team. Also, senior middle hitter Kayla Simon earned honorable mention in the WCC."We have great passers, a good setter and so many hitters that can put the ball down," Bowe said.Bowe will get a crash course in playoff pressure in the coming weeks. The Ramblers played the role of spoiler last year, ousting Stanley-Boyd, which had won the D3 state tournament the previous fall, in the sectional semifinals.Like Stanley-Boyd before them, the Ramblers carried the area's volleyball crown into this season. Now they have to avoid falling victim to an upset like the one they executed a year ago."We have to take it one game at a time," Johnson said. "We cannot look ahead to anybody. We can't look over anybody, beyond anybody. We have to focus on playing Regis volleyball - executing, doing the little things right - and then going into the next game."Talent. Experience. Momentum. Confidence. The Ramblers have all four working in their favor and enough pieces in place to take another shot at a state title, provided they can protect that target on their backs."I think that this is a team that can get there, but we have to decide it together," Johnson said. "Our biggest thing is we never want another team to decide our fate. If we lose, we want to make sure we're losing playing our best game, doing things our way and leaving it all on the court. The last thing we ever want is for a team to decide that for us. It has to be our decision to make."If that happens, the Ramblers have become confident they can duplicate - or even exceed - their success from last fall. And, of course, they know what it would mean to surpass last season's mark - a spot in the state title match."We are very excited," Plank said. "We are ready to go back to state and get the gold ball this time."I think we could outdo what we did last year."Teams To Watch ...... In the WIAA volleyball playoffs, which begin today and culminate with the state tournament Nov. 6-8 at the Resch Center in Green Bay:Division 1Eau Claire North: The Huskies, who won the Big Rivers Conference in 2007, had a slow start this season, dropping two of their first three BRC matches. However, they've righted their ship and enter the postseason playing some good volleyball. Most recently, they had a 4-0 showing and won the BRC tournament in Rice Lake this past weekend. The Huskies are a No. 2 seed, with the No. 1 being BRC champion Chippewa Falls - a team North took to five sets earlier this fall. What's more, the Huskies had a two-set lead in that match against Chippewa Falls before the Cardinals stormed back. Serena Wagner can be a real difference-maker at the net for coach Perris Cooley and the Huskies.Division 2Altoona: The Railroaders had an impressive season in a tough Western Cloverbelt Conference. They finished second behind Eau Claire Regis, and they won't see the Ramblers - a Division 3 team - in the playoffs. Brittany Gregorich and tall left-hander Sarah Nielsen make for a very dangerous 1-2 offensive combination, and Rails coach Ron "Duff" Martin has raved about how sophomore setter Bethany Reyzer has come into her own this fall. Aside from being swept by the Ramblers, the Rails lost just one set in WCC play this season. The Rails, who received honorable mention in the latest Wisconsin Volleyball Coaches Association Division 2 poll, have more than enough parts to make a serious run as their regional's No. 2 seed.Division 4Eau Claire Immanuel Lutheran: The Lancers got a No. 5 seed in their regional last fall, a draw that seemed a bit low for the Dairyland Conference champions. However, they ended up getting bounced in the first round, swept at the hands of No. 4 Greenwood in the regional quarterfinals. This time, the Dairyland champs certainly got some respect - a No. 1 seed in their regional, to be exact. The Lancers have a bit of a different look this fall without Ashlee VerMulm and Jessie Meyer, but they've got enough talent back to make good on that top seed. Lancers coach Joe Lau has received strong performances from Stephanie Lau, Katherine Kazemba and April Oster leading up to the postseason. If the seeds hold until the regional finals, the Lancers could get a shot at revenge against Greenwood, which took second in the Eastern Cloverbelt Conference this fall and is the No. 2 seed.- Justin Harings...
Ground game can lead to winsRon Buckli column: Teams ride 100-yard ... Found: 1 Month 2 Weeks 5 Days 2 Hours 50 Minutes ago Leader-Telegram - You've heard it before. When Ryan Grant rushes for 100 yards, the Packers win. The same can be said of P.J. Hill of the Badgers. And so on.Point being, it is said the team that controls the line of scrimmage, controls the clock and controls the game.It is a fact that was borne out in northwest Wisconsin high school football last weekend. In games reported to the L-T, there were 21 backs who topped 100 yards. All but two played on winning teams. The ground hogs included Jake Wilson (131) of Menomonie, Andy Edholm (143) of Hudson, Bucky Dixon (194) of Hayward, Kyle Hetke (124) of Chetek, Cody Ninneman (111) of Baldwin-Woodville, Ryan Bechel (114) of Elmwood, Taylor Turene (165) of Thorp, Paul Reit (110) of Stanley-Boyd, Tyler Bosshart (138) of Spring Valley and Jake Espeseth (207) of Clear Lake. Some teams doubled up on their opponents. Whitehall did it with Chad Stellfplug (138) and Kevin Berg (117), Bloomer with Trevor Morning (119) and Jordan Koehler (112), New Auburn with Caleb Trowbridge (177) and Kaleb Schulner (104) and Owen-Withee with Zach Pomputis (236) and Dave Simenson (154).Those who played on losing teams were Nathan Weltzin (150) of Cumberland and Cody Olson (133) of Cornell.Of course, some backs have more opportunity than others. For instance, Owen-Withee doesn't even spike the ball to stop the clock. The Blackhawks rushed 64 times for 441 yards in the 36-0 win over Loyal. If you think that was something, try Bloomer. These Blackhawks ran 44 times for 407 yards. Good, but not exactly a record. But get a load of this. They added 199 yards in the air, thanks to Jon Barlow, to total 606 yards. That is a season's worth for many teams. There are always exceptions to the rushing rule. Chippewa Falls got outrushed by Rice Lake 201-54. And won. Thanks to Mitch Olson's 257-yard aerial assault.Cutting it closeThere were seven games decided by a touchdown or less and that included Durand's 21-20 win over Amery and Chetek's 14-10 win over Ladysmith. Both teams had to come from behind.Kyle Hetke's 7-yard TD run with 7 minutes, 19 seconds to play was good for Chetek while the Durand win was a little tighter. Cody Anderson scored from the 1 with 18 seconds left to pull the Panthers within one. On a roll of the dice, Nathan Prissel found the end zone on a run to pull out the win.Long touchdown runs don't always lead to wins. Nathan Weltzin ran 81 yards from scrimmage for Cumberland; Brandon Schaffer did 85 for Clayton; Tanner Tryggestad had an 85-yard kickoff return for Amery and Jordan Reidt did an 83 return for Independence/Gilmanton. They all lost. One team that did win and the celebration continues is Alma Center Lincoln. The Hornets stung Alma 18-14 and it was the first 'W' since the 2006 season in a losing streak that reached more than 15 games. There's always a sad part to a win. Alma lost. And is winless. The unbeaten list remains at eight and they are Chippewa Falls, Bloomer, Baldwin-Woodville, Colby, Hayward, Plum City, St. Croix Falls and Shell Lake. One will fall from the ranks as Bloomer travels to Hayward and two others face still challenges: Plum City is at Elmwood and Chippewa Falls hosts Menomonie....

Webb finishes in eighthWIAA state golf: Webb finishes in eighth Found: 1 Month 2 Weeks 6 Days 5 Hours 12 Minutes ago Leader-Telegram - Casi Webb capped off a spectacular high school golf career with a solid final round at the WIAA girls golf state meet Tuesday at University Ridge in Verona.Webb, a senior from Eau Claire North, shot a 4-over par 74 to finish with a two-day total of 156. That put her in a three-way tie for eighth place, 11 strokes behind Division 1 champion Tory Bauman of Glendale Nicolet. Only three golfers had a better round Tuesday than Webb, including Bauman.Webb was competing in her third state meet. The four-time Big Rivers golfer of the year finished fifth last season.Green Bay Notre Dame won the Division 1 team title with 630 strokes, 27 better than second-place Mequon Homestead. Waukesha Catholic Memorial took third with 676 and Kettle Moraine took fourth with 678.Hudson took eighth with 701 strokes. Cassie Wrum had the best two-day total of 167, good for 25th place. Molly Fassbinder had a 173 to take 37th.Osceola's Lindsay Danielson became the first girl to win four WIAA state titles, shooting a two-day total of 143 to win in Division 2. She had a 1-under par 71 on Monday and an even-par 72 on Tuesday.Baldwin-Woodville's Karlyn Sturtevant bounced back from Monday's round of 94 to shoot an 81 on Tuesday which put her in 15th place. Erica Timmers shot an 87, which was 11 strokes better than the 98 she had on Monday. The turnaround helped the Blackhawks take third as a team, six strokes behind Arcadia/Cochrane-Fountain City.Other scores for Baldwin-Woodville included Michelle Hinz (93), Alexa Harmon (97) and Tanya LaFavor (118).Madison Edgewood easily won the team title, finishing 120 strokes better than Arcadia/Cochrane-Fountain City.
