What's with that thick growth along city bike trail?Questions in the ...
Found: 1 Week 5 Days 8 Hours 25 Minutes ago
Leader-Telegram - Editor's note: Questions in the News is a column in which experts respond to readers' questions.Q: Trees and vegetation have become so thick on the downtown city bike trail, especially along First Avenue, that it's hard to see the river. Does the city plan to do any thinning?A: The Forestry Division in conjunction with the Parks Division plans to do selective trimming and brushing along the trail system, including the section along the west bank of the Chippewa River from Lake Street to the railroad bridge, said Brian Amundson, Eau Claire's director of public works.Todd Chwala, city forester, will be coordinating the work, and he has indicated the brushing and clearing is planned for the upcoming winter as the weather and workload permits.Q: What does it cost each year to add fluoride to our water supply? Does the addition of fluoride cause any additional maintenance problems for the water utility?A: The cost of adding fluoride to the municipal water supply system in Eau Claire is approximately $49,000 in 2008, Amundson said. This expense represents less than 1 percent of the total operating costs for the water system, which has an operating budget of $5.8 million.Flouride does not cause any additional maintenance problems for the water system, he said.Q: We have a 270-mile stretch of highway from Menomonie to Sturgeon Bay - Interstate 94 and state highways 29 and 57 - and on this 270 miles of highway there is no rest area from Menomonie to Sturgeon Bay. This is a new interstate, and why rest areas were left off I cannot find out.A: Tom Van Beek, engineering specialist in the Wisconsin Department of Transportation's Bureau of Highway Operation, replied."The short answer to your question is that due to lack of funding, new facilities (rest areas) are not being built in places or at the rate they were from the 1950s to the 1980s. Another significant stretch of highway in Wisconsin that could use a rest area runs from Stevens Point to Hurley along U.S. 51."The long answer is that it has been Wisconsin DOT policy to not build new rest areas at new sites. This policy has been in effect for many years."Regardless of attaining funding - federal or state - the Wisconsin DOT and the state Legislature have recognized the trend of the average traveler preferring to stop at gas stations, convenience stores, etc., which offer many more amenities than the average rest area."This is reflected both in the level of funding allocated to DOT for maintenance of existing facilities as well as the lack of funding to build new ones."- responses compiled by Leader-Telegram reporter Joe Knight...
